𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀

On 27th May 2026, His Excellency Akio ISOMATA, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, signed a grant contract for a demining project under the scheme of “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)”, with Mr. Kevin Klerx, Head of Support Services of the Mines Advisory Group(MAG), Ms. Hannah Picton, Programme Manager of the Hazardous Area Life-support Organization(The HALO Trust) and Mr. Ananda Chandrasiri, Director/ Program Manager of the Delvon Assistance for Social Harmony (DASH).

The Government of Japan has provided USD 1,343,202 (approx. Rs. 400million) for these projects, which will be implemented by MAG, The HALO Trust and DASH, to support their humanitarian demining activities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka. Under this new project, almost 400,000 m2 of land is expected to be made mine-free, allowing more than 3,100 people to return to their land and approx. 22,000 people in the surrounding areas to expand their economic activities. Japan has been a major donor to demining activities in Sri Lanka since 2002, and the total assistance amounts to over USD 49 million.

”Expressing his deepest gratitude to the three NGOs for their untiring efforts in the demining activities, Ambassador ISOMATA said: “Today's signing of three (3) grant contracts is another testament to Japan’s commitment to continued assistance to the people of Sri Lanka, especially to those in the conflict-affected areas. At the same time, we also have to strengthen assistance to the affected communities for the enhancement of livelihoods and improvement of necessary infrastructure, in order to help the people of the communities to move on to the next stage of socio-economic development in the North and East in a seamless manner. I hope Japan’s continued assistance to the demining efforts of Sri Lanka will further strengthen the strong bond of trust and friendship that exists between Japan and Sri Lanka.”

Commenting on the receipt of this grant assistance, Mr. Kevin Klerx, Head of Support Services of MAG, stated. “For nearly 23 years, MAG has helped reduce the threat of landmines and ERW in Sri Lanka, with longstanding support from the government of Japan. This assistance has enabled MAG to release over 3.9 million square meters of land and destroy thousands of explosive items.”

Commenting on the receipt of this grant assistance, Ms. Hannah Picton, Programme Manager of the HALO Trust, stated. “The HALO Trust is delighted with the continued and generous support from the Government of Japan. HALO has cleared 303,000 landmines and released 121 square kilometres of contaminated land. Supporting over 185,000 displaced people to resettle in the Northern Province, enabling communities to rebuild and restore sustainable livelihoods.”

Commenting on the receipt of this grant assistance, Mr. Ananda Chandrasiri, Director / Programme Manager of DASH, stated. “DASH has cleared 8.1 km² of land, destroyed thousands of mines and explosive remnants, and benefited nearly 195,000 people directly and indirectly. This project will clear over 110,000 square meters, improving safety, livelihoods, and access to infrastructure, and enabling resettlement.”

On 2nd June, the fourth meeting of the Japan–Sri Lanka Committee on Business Environment was convened at the Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka.

Representatives from the Embassy of Japan, the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), relevant Japanese companies operating in Sri Lanka, as well as officials from the BOI and other pertinent Sri Lankan authorities, participated in the meeting.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Jayawardena, the newly appointed Acting Chairman of the BOI, expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders on both the Japanese and Sri Lankan sides for their efforts in organizing the meeting. He underscored the significance of the Committee’s work in fostering a conducive business environment and supporting Sri Lanka’s objective of increasing foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to the targeted level of USD 2 billion.

Mr. Kishi, Chairperson of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, also conveyed his appreciation to all parties involved and emphasized the importance of continuing this constructive dialogue to further strengthen economic and investment relations between Japan and Sri Lanka.

The meeting featured substantive and productive discussions on a range of business and investment-related issues currently affecting Japanese enterprises operating in Sri Lanka. Participants exchanged views on challenges faced by investors and explored avenues for enhancing the country’s business environment, with a view to promoting greater Japanese investment and economic cooperation.

𝙏𝙀𝘾𝙃𝙉𝙄𝘾𝙄𝘼𝙉 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙈𝘽𝘼𝙎𝙎𝙔 𝙊𝙁 𝙅𝘼𝙋𝘼𝙉

Applications are invited from qualified Sri Lankan nationals for the post of maintenance team Technician at the Embassy of Japan.

𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 ＆ 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲:
● Age between 25-40
● G.C.E Advanced level qualification.
● A Diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, with minimum of 3 to 5 years professional construction or maintenance experience at government agencies, embassy or large building.
● Ability to perform maintenance on offices and related facilities.
● The ability to respond to emergencies and planned work during nighttime, public holidays, and weekends.
● The residence must be within 15km of the Japanese Embassy, ​​and emergency response must be prompt.
● Proficiency in Speaking/reading/writing English is required.
● Computer Literacy and conversation with Microsoft software (word. Excel. outlook)

𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆:
The post on offer is for full-time, with working hours from 0830-1700, Monday to Friday. The salary scale of successful candidate will be decided based on his/her experience and qualifications.

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
Interested candidate are required to submit: (a)A bio data with two non-related reference, (b) one photograph taken within the last 6 months, (c)copies of high education certificates / working certificates, to the Administrations Section of the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka (20, Srimath R.G.Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 07) . The acceptance of applications will close on 08th June 2026.Any documents submitted at the time of applications will not be returned to the candidates and will be managed by the Embassy appropriately). If the candidates have passed the first screening, the Embassy will contact the candidates for the second screening.

On 29th May, the formal signing ceremony was held at the Embassy of Japan in Colombo, signed by H.E. ISOMATA Akio, Ambassador of Japan, and Mr. Vimlendra Sharan, FAO Representative, in the presence of Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources.

Funded by the Government of Japan with a total budget of USD 1.33 million ,this joint initiative aims to restore inland fisheries livelihoods and strengthen the resilience of fishing communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah in the Eastern Province. Ambassador ISOMATA Akio stated,
"This project is a strategic investment in the future , aiming to construct resilient fishery communities capable of withstanding future climate-related shocks. At a time when marine fisheries face high fuel costs, enhancing inland fisheries—which require significantly less fuel while securing a vital domestic source of protein —is crucial for Sri Lanka’s national food security. The Government and the people of Japan will continue to stand alongside the people of Sri Lanka as a steadfast friend and partner."
