The Russian House in Colombo hosted a special farewell meeting with Sri Lankan students who will soon be heading to Russia to pursue their studies under the quota of the Government of the Russian Federation. This year, for the first time in the history of our educational programme, 105 students are heading to Russia — twice as many as before!
The future students were joined in the hall by their parents and older siblings, who have already studied or are currently studying in Russia and have now become mentors of sorts for the next generation. For many families, this was a truly important day. Each student was officially presented with a letter confirming their selection to study under the Russian quota.
🎓 This year, the quota was doubled in response to the growing interest among Sri Lankan youth in Russian education. Behind each of these 105 places lies a tremendous amount of work: consultations, webinars, assistance with documents, answers to hundreds of questions, and careful guidance for applicants at every stage of the process.
The Director of the Russian House, Madam Maria Popova, congratulated them on this important milestone and wished them every success as they begin a new chapter of their lives. She also expressed the hope that, after completing their studies, they would return to Sri Lanka as successful professionals who can contribute to their country, Russia, and the continued development of friendship between the two nations.
“Studying in Russia is not only an opportunity to receive a quality education, but also a chance to discover a new country and culture, meet friends from all over the world, and gain experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life,” she noted.
Education Manager Elina Babaeva, Education Officer Buthmi Perera and Nihal de Zoysa, who guided applicants step by step throughout the entire quota campaign, shared practical advice and spoke about important matters — from visa support and financial transfers to adapting to a new environment and even the simplest everyday concerns.
One of the warmest messages to the students came from CEO of the Russian House and President of the Association of Sri Lankan Graduates of Russian Universities Mr. Buddhapriya Ramanayake. Being a distinguished graduate of RUDN University, he spoke to the future students as someone who had once walked the same path himself, reminding the students of one important thing: Whatever their culture or religion— in Russia, they will all represent their homeland, Sri Lanka. Each of them will, in their own way, become an ambassador of their country.
We wish our “Golden Hundred” successful studies, a smooth adaptation, wonderful friendships and great achievements!
And remember: the Russian House will always remain your home. ❤️

🦚 One of the vibrant cultural highlights of September in Colombo was the unique 'Colours 2026: A Symphony of Feathers' exhibition, showcasing artworks by students of St. Joseph’s College.

The event was honoured by the presence of Ambassador of Russia HE Levan Dzhagaryan and Director of the Russian House Madam Maria Popova.

This was the second exhibition featuring the works of students from this renowned college. The first was successfully held in Colombo last year, while this year, the students decided to present their creativity on a more international platform by inviting representatives of foreign diplomatic missions. It was particularly meaningful that, by majority vote, the students themselves chose representatives of Russia.

This choice was no coincidence. For the past 40 years, the Russian House in Colombo has supported the talented youth of Sri Lanka, helping them develop their abilities and discover new opportunities for growth. The Russian House is also home to a renowned art studio, where young artists receive training and where exhibitions and masterclasses are regularly held. For this reason, meeting the students of St. Joseph’s College was especially meaningful and enjoyable for us.

🎨 The exhibition featured works by 94 talented young artists aged between 6 and 18. Each participant personally presented her work and shared the creative idea behind it.

During the exhibition, the Russian House team introduced the young Sri Lankan generation — including future university applicants — to Russian creative arts universities, as well as opportunities to pursue higher education in Russia through the annual scholarship quota.

This is an ongoing area of the Russian House’s work. Through meetings with talented and active young people across Sri Lanka, we introduce them to opportunities for continuing their education in Russia and invite them to discover our country.

One of the most touching surprises of the event was a collection of gifts from the young artists — portraits of the Ambassador of Russia and the Director of the Russian House, specially created for the occasion. These artworks will remain a wonderful reminder of this memorable meeting.

We wish all the students of St. Joseph’s College continued success, inspiration, and the opportunity to further develop their talents! 🎨🦚🇷🇺🇱🇰

Statement by Igor Chaika, the Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Agency

Sibiga’s call to shut down Russian Houses around the world inevitably brings to mind a character from Russian literature who became an example of destructive idiocy — Polygraph Polygraphovich Sharikov from Mikhail Bulgakov’s Heart of the Dog.
It is hardly surprising that Ukraine's Foreign Minister is calling for the closure of Russian Houses in Europe. Intolerance toward Russians has been characteristic of the Kiev N**i regime since 2014.
I am confident that the educated majority around the world will clearly disapprove this. Especially since we have seen tens of thousands of Germans oppose the closure of the Russian House in Berlin and our Agency has received numerous letters of support.
Russian Houses have always been and will be centers of dialogue for millions of all around the world. They introduce the rich culture of Russia, its language, history, and scientific achievements.

Through Russian House our country offers to the world educational projects, humanitarian assistance, Russian language courses, cultural dialogue and many other forms of cooperation. It is clear however that globalist elites through the Kiev N**i regime are trying to stop the progress and development of countries including those in Asia and Africa, and to preserve their dependence on them. Russia on the contrary develops partnership and equal cooperation. This is what international development assistance is about: it contributes to improvement of economic indicators around the world and reduction of humanitarian crises.

But, alas, these facts are beyond the comprehension of Polygraph Polygraphovich Sibiga.
Therefore whatever his complaints may be Rossotrudnichestvo will continue its work around the world including European countries.
We will continue modernization of Russian Houses abroad - it will become a relevant showcase of modern Russia: a rapidly developing country with technological sovereignty.

We are launching a microgrant program for those around the world who share Russia’s values and want partnership and cooperation with us. We will also provide humanitarian assistance to those who need it. All of this is receiving a strong response from people in many different countries. The International Youth Festival in Yekaterinburg once again showed international interest in the Agency’s projects. Thousands of guests from hundreds of countries visited the Rossotrudnichestvo stand “Russia With You.”

Moreover, just for one last month we have received 11 requests to open new Russian Houses around the world. And this is only the beginning.

Follow our new projects, apply for our microgrants, be proud, and do not allow the Kiev junta, which has destroyed Ukraine’s statehood, betrayed the faith and history of Ukrainians, and cowardly refused to hold elections, to influence you.

September brought a milestone we had been eagerly looking forward to: Russian language classes have officially begun at Sivali Central College in Ratnapura! And already, around 100 students from Grades 9 and 10 are studying Russian as part of their compulsory school curriculum.

Leading the classes is Tulshi Fernando, a member of the League of Russianists of Sri Lanka and a graduate of Kazan State University. Tulshi is already teaching Russian at another major school in Ratnapura — Ferguson College, where the Russian language programme was launched by the Russian House in April 2025.

Today, she has become something of a Russian House ambassador in Sabaragamuwa Province, helping the Russian language reach further beyond Colombo.

And Sivali Central College holds a particularly special place in our story. ❤️

In January 2023, the college unveiled a bust of Yuri Gagarin, created by renowned local sculptor Pushpakumara Heras. The world’s first cosmonaut visited Sivali in 1961, and his historic visit continues to be remembered and cherished by the school community to this day.

The college is also home to Sri Lanka’s largest school astronomy community. The Russian House has visited the school on numerous occasions, supporting its young astronomy enthusiasts and exploring the wonders of space together.

Last year, on Cosmonautics Day, we presented the school’s astronomy community with a professional telescope — helping students take their fascination with the universe even further. 🔭✨

The college’s Principal, Captain Neil Watukarawatta, and Deputy Principal Manil Niriella also featured in our documentary “Gagarin’s Footprint in Ceylon.”

But our friendship with Ratnapura extends far beyond a single school.

Earlier this year, the Russian House hosted a large-scale Colombo–Ratnapura Friendship Festival, welcoming representatives and students from three leading schools in Sabaragamuwa Province.

It was during that visit that the principals of Kingston College and Sivali Central College approached us with a request to introduce Russian language courses at their schools.

And now, one of those wishes has become a reality. ✨

We are delighted to see the Russian House expanding its presence not only in Colombo, but far beyond the capital. The Russian language is reaching new cities, new schools and new generations of Sri Lankan students.

And little by little, Ratnapura is becoming another point on the map of Russian-speaking Sri Lanka. 🇷🇺🇱🇰

The grounds of Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo came alive with Visakha EduFest & Carnival 2026 — a vibrant educational festival bringing together students, parents, teachers and visitors for a day filled with learning, creativity and fun.

The Russian House in Colombo was delighted to be part of the educational segment of the festival, introducing visitors to opportunities for studying in Russia, Russian educational programmes and the diverse cultural and educational projects offered by the Russian House.

🎓Higher education in Russia was one of the topics that drew particular interest from students and parents. Education Coordinator of the Russian House, Elina Babaeva, spoke about the advantages of studying at Russian universities, the wide range of fields available and the opportunities for admission.

Visitors also discovered opportunities to learn the Russian language and explore the Russian House’s wide range of cultural and educational programmes — from art and music to ballet and chess. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas and speak directly with representatives of the Russian House.

✨ For many students, this was their first introduction to the Russian education system and an opportunity to begin thinking about studying in Russia in the future.

📢 And there is something exciting ahead!

The next long-awaited scholarship campaign for Sri Lankan students wishing to study at Russian universities will be launching soon. A new online platform for submitting applications will also become available in the near future.

We look forward to welcoming applications from the bright, talented and ambitious young people of Sri Lanka — and hope that another 100 Sri Lankan students will set off for Russia in the coming academic year to discover a new country, a new educational experience and take their first steps towards their future. 🎓✨
