June 1st marks International Children's Day in Russia, a tradition observed since 1950 following the World Conference for the Well-being of Children. More than a celebration, it serves as a reminder of society's responsibility to protect children's rights, support their development, and create a safe and nurturing future for the next generation.
On this special day, we celebrate the joy, creativity, and boundless potential of children, while reaffirming our commitment to their wellbeing and happiness.

🏛️✨ International Museum Day 2026 United Cultural Missions at the National Museum of Colombo on 18 May 2026
This year, for the first time in history, a joint collaboration was held with the National Museum of Colombo — the oldest museum in the capital, a unique historical and ethnographic space located in a magnificent colonial-era building that is rightfully considered one of the cultural gems of the island.
This day brought together cultural missions from various countries including Russia, India, China and Japan who showcased their traditions, together with local religious associations.
The audience especially warmly welcomed the performance by the Russian School of Ballet and Dancing. Our performers, dressed in vibrant custom-made Gzhel-inspired costumes, performed a quadrille choreographed by senior instructor Mrs. Shenaalie Dias ,as always, received enthusiastic applause from the audience. Russia was also represented by Embassy schoolgirls Masha and Sasha representing the Russian School of Music , who performed the universally beloved and unifying song “Sunny Circle.”
This day once again reminded everyone that museums are not only guardians of history, but also living spaces for cultural dialogue, friendship, and mutual understanding among nations. 🌍✨

Director of the Russian House in Colombo Madam Maria Popova gave an exclusive interview to Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC),the oldest radio station in Sri Lanka, the legendary Radio Ceylon, whose history spans more than a century.
The interview took place in a truly unique atmosphere inside the historic radio station building, in a vintage studio that has preserved its colonial style, wooden interiors, and the special magic of an era when radio was the main voice of the world.
The conversation focused on cultural cooperation between Russia and Sri Lanka, the large-scale projects of the Russian House, international festivals, literary initiatives, and modern approaches to cultural diplomacy. The role of culture as a universal language that unites people and countries in an era of rapid global change. Special attention was given to how cultural centers can remain engaging for younger generations, who today perceive art and traditions in entirely new ways.
Another important topic of conversation was major Russian festivals, the significance of cultural heritage, and one of the most vibrant Slavic celebrations — Ivan Kupala Night, its symbolism, traditions, and modern interpretation.
The interview turned out to be incredibly lively and emotional filled with genuine laughter, vivid stories, and a true atmosphere of cultural dialogue.
📻 The interview will air this Thursday, and we sincerely thank SLBC for this unique collaboration and the opportunity to tell millions of listeners across the island about the rich diversity of Russian culture, traditions, and the modern humanitarian projects of the Russian House.

Our series continues — and this week we are delighted to welcome to the Russian House in Colombo our long-time colleagues and friends, the delegation from the Chuvash State Pedagogical University named after I.Ya. Yakovlev. Together with CSPU, we have been implementing vibrant and successful projects in Sri Lanka for several years to promote the Russian language and Russian culture.
Today’s meeting was especially inspiring — a gathering with the winners of the “Experts of the Russian Language” Olympiad, which was successfully held in Colombo last year. At that time, the three best participants received a unique opportunity to travel to Cheboksary, where an intensive educational and cultural program had been prepared for them. The trip left unforgettable impressions on the students, and even a year later they still warmly recall the time they spent in Russia. During today’s meeting, the participants shared their stories, spoke about how their lives had changed over the past year, and reflected on the impact that their знакомства with Russia, the Russian language, and Russian culture had on them.
Another important event was the meeting between the CSPU delegation and ten of the most active and talented representatives of the League of Russianists of Sri Lanka — our true “golden fund.” Specially for this meeting, Russian language teachers traveled from different cities across the island. Very soon, they will travel to Cheboksary to participate in advanced professional development courses.
The Russian House consistently supports the League of Russianists of Sri Lanka and does everything possible to ensure that our teachers regularly improve their qualifications, become familiar with modern teaching methodologies, and strengthen professional ties with Russian universities. Cooperation with CSPU remains one of the brightest and most successful examples of this work.
An important outcome of the meeting was the signing of an agreement on the joint implementation of educational and humanitarian projects in Sri Lanka this year. Particular attention will be given to the further development of the “Experts of the Russian Language” Olympiad, which has already established itself as an effective tool for promoting the Russian language among the youth of the island, as well as the launch of new and exciting initiatives.
We are sincerely happy to welcome the CSPU delegation to Sri Lanka and are confident that even more joint projects, inspiring meetings, and new successes in promoting the Russian language on the island lie ahead!

This May, our series opens with an extraordinary and inspiring guest — Russian entrepreneur Elena Chernyaeva, an active member of the Skolkovo Women’s Business Club and participant in public business organizations such as Opora Russia, Business Russia, and other professional communities.
For more than 10 years, Elena has been cooperating with Sri Lanka, developing business connections between our countries and creating projects that unite people, ideas, and opportunities. Today, she presented an exciting concept for international cooperation based at the Russian House in Colombo.
Among Elena’s projects is her own production of dehydrated tropical fruits in Sri Lanka, designed in a modern export format with stylish packaging. In addition, she successfully develops projects in Russia in the field of sports tourism, organizing trips for families and professional athletes, while also serving as a co-organizer of major business and sports forums.
Currently, the entrepreneur is actively working on a new project in Sri Lanka — the creation of a sports hotel with a professional swimming pool for athletes, as well as a multifunctional sports center for local residents featuring a variety of sports activities.
During the meeting, Russian House Director Madam Maria Popova and Elena Chernyaeva discussed many promising areas of cooperation and future international initiatives. Special attention was given to supporting active Russian and Sri Lankan women entrepreneurs, developing international connections, creative industries, and strengthening business dialogue between the two countries.
One of the key ideas discussed was the organization of an international forum for successful women this summer at the Russian House, with the participation of representatives of the Skolkovo Business Club, Russian entrepreneurs, and prominent members of Sri Lanka’s business and creative communities.
The Russian House in Colombo is pleased to serve as a co-organizer of such a large-scale international initiative aimed at strengthening cultural, humanitarian, and business ties between Russia and Sri Lanka.
Following a warm tradition and as a symbol of good luck for future joint projects, Elena Chernyaeva tied a ribbon to our legendary symbolic naa tree — a sign of strengthening Russian–Sri Lankan friendship and future successful cooperation between our countries.
