Let us welcome the New Year with light, not with loss. Enjoy fireworks responsibly and help minimize eye injuries. Use protective goggles, supervise children and never aim fireworks at animals ! Celebrate safely — vision is for life!"

21st and 22nd of March 2026 will forever be marked as two golden days in the history of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka and of the National Eye Hospital. On these two days, the two institutions together conducted the 1000 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 programme at NEH, 𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 1129 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 in two days.
This free cataract surgery camp was organised by the College to commemorate the first year anniversary of its Gift of Vision Humanitarian Initiative. This initiative was launched last year to give relief to thousands of patients awaiting cataract surgery in government hospitals. Under this programme over 4000 cataract surgeries have been done at various hospitals (Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya, Dikoya, Matara, Rathnapura, Kahawatta, Polonnaruwa, Mahiyanganaya, Trincomalee, Badulla and Gampola). With the 1000 cataract surgery camp, the number surpassed 5000.
The College wishes to thank Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara, Director, NEH and his entire staff whose unwavering dedication was instrumental towards the success of the camp.
We also wish to thank our generous donor of the 1000 intra ocular lenses, Dr. V. Sarveshwaran of AssistRR Foundation and everyone else who helped out.
The College is also grateful to its dedicated members, the Consultant Eye Surgeons from Jaffna to Hambanthota and in between, who readily spent their weekend assisting this worthy cause...
