💻 Empowering Local Governance Through Modern GIS Technology!

Recently, our team conducted a specialized capacity-building workshop for Planning and Development Officers from Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) across the North Western Province. This program was designed to equip officers with modern spatial mapping technology to enhance local governance, resource allocation, and regional development planning.

This workshop was made possible through expert technical direction and practical guidance. Here is a quick look at what we accomplished during the session:

🔹 Comprehensive resource support and technical guidance provided by the GIS Unit NWP, focusing on essential field level work.
🔹 Introduction and official handover of Grahana (ග්‍රහණ), a custom tracking software developed by the GIS Unit NWP to streamline field data collection.
🔹 Dedicated, hands-on practical training for officers on how to use the Grahana software effectively to record and manage tracks in the field.

We are always ready to support new initiatives that make public administrative services more efficient, tech driven, and transparent for everyone.

💧 Mapping Our Water Resources for a Smarter Future!

📍 Venue : Agrarian Service Center - Nattandiya/Thabbowa & Agrarian Service Center - Kudawewa

Recently, our team started an important project to map tanks, anicuts, and water sources across the North Western Province. After completing field checks with local officers, we officially began entering accurate and verified ground data into our new digital system on September 10th at both Nattandiya/Thabbowa and Kudawewa Agrarian Development Center Areas.

This project was made possible through great teamwork across different departments. Here is a quick look at who worked together to make this happen.

🔹 Strong support from local Agrarian Development Officers and Agriculture Research Assistants to gather real ground data.
🔹 Technical leadership from our GIS Unit Head, Mr. M.M.S. Premachandra, along with software development support from Mr. Dinindu Jayalath, Lecturer, University of Peradeniya.
🔹 Dedicated assistance from Mrs. S.A. Ishani, GIS Officers, Nattandiya Pradeshiya Sabha and Mrs. K.J.P.S.S. Fernando, GIS Officers, Wennappuwa Pradeshiya Sabha.

So, what is our next step? 🚶‍♂️ Our team is currently making arrangements to visit other regions across the province so we can map and upload data for all remaining water sources.

🚀 Showcasing Digital Innovation: Mapping Public Properties with GIS

We are super excited to share a proud moment in our journey to modernize public services. Our ongoing efforts to bring smart Geographic Information System (GIS) technology into local administration were recently featured on national television.

Mr. S.K. Jayalath, Commissioner, Department of Local Government - NWP and Mr. M.M.S. Premachandra, Investigating Officer and Conceptual Owner of the GIS Initiative joined the popular morning program "Irida Ayubowan" on ජාතික රූපවාහිනිය - Sri Lanka Rupavahini (TV) Corporation. The main focus of the discussion was showcasing our project on mapping public properties across the North Western Province using GIS technology.

🚀 Taking a Smart Step Towards Digital Land Valuation

We are super excited to share another big milestone in our journey to modernize public services! Our mission to bring smart GIS technology into everyday government processes is expanding into new and important areas. 💻✨

Recently, our GIS Unit officers sat down for a highly productive preliminary discussion with the Provincial Revenue Department. The main focus of the day? Finding ways to use GIS technology to make updating land values faster, easier, and much more accurate! 🗺️💰

During this engaging session, both teams brainstormed and explored a variety of great ideas. Here is a quick look at what we covered:
🔹 Open discussions on how GIS can solve current challenges in land valuation.
🔹 Planning the technical requirements and groundwork needed to get started.
🔹 Outlining a clear roadmap to bring these ideas to life.

So, what is our next step? 🚶‍♂️ Our team is currently putting together a complete technical program for the initial work. Once we share this plan and brief the officers, the Provincial Revenue Department will run the pilot project, while our team handles all the technical GIS support! 🎯

🗺️ Expanding Digital Public Services to the Eastern Province

We are thrilled to announce that our mission to digitize the public sector using GIS technology is growing. What started in the North Western Province has now proudly expanded to the Eastern Province.

Kattankudy Urban Council has stepped up as the very first Local Authority in the East to embrace this digital transformation. Driven by the strong vision and invitation of the Hon. Chairman, Mr. S. H. M. Asfar, we conducted a highly successful 05 day basic GIS training session for their officers.

During this program, the Kattankudy team learned the essentials of GIS technology. What we covered in the training,

🔹 Basic theoretical training on GIS technology
🔹 Practical field tracking of roads and infrastructure facilities like street lights
🔹 Processing, updating, and modifying tracked data using QGIS software

This training was proudly guided by our own GIS UNIT - NWP resource persons,

🗺️ Solving Road Mapping Issues in the North Western Province

We recently held a very important workshop! We gathered at the Narammala Pradeshiya Sabha to discuss and solve problems related to mapping and gazetting process of roads owned by local government institutions.

During this program, GIS officers from local councils all across the North Western Province came together to share ideas and find practical solutions.

⚖️ Establishing a Formal Legal Framework for Physical Resources Mapping

We successfully concluded the highly productive second day of our specialized workshop dedicated to drafting a formal legal framework for the Physical Resources Mapping Project in the North Western Province.

To ensure this project meets all administrative requirements, Day 02 focused on presenting the initial draft regulations to our key administrative officers. Gathering their practical insights and ideas is an essential step in finalizing a legal background that is both comprehensive and easy to implement across the province.

During the session, the draft framework prepared on the first day was brought to the attention of all participating officers. Mr. Gamini Gunasekara provided a clear summary of the previously documented matters, emphasizing the critical importance of this regulatory foundation. The highly valuable views and suggestions from the administrative officers were successfully incorporated to strengthen the final draft.

Driven by the vision of the GIS UNIT - NWP, this workshop highlights our commitment to combining smart technology with robust policy frameworks to build a secure, legally sound, and rapidly developing province.

We were highly honored by the presence of Mr. I.M.I. llangakoon, Chief Secretary of the North Western Province, who participated in the day's proceedings and provided excellent leadership.
