As at 6.00 am on 4th of August 2026
ℹ️Key Highlights:
✏️Compared to the previous day, rainfall has significantly decreased across many areas over the past 24 hours.
✏️If no further rainfall occurs today, the current conditions have the potential to return to normal.
✏️However, weather forecasts still predict rainfall, particularly for the western slopes of the central highlands in the wet zone.
✏️Because water levels in the Kelani, Kalu, and Mahaweli rivers remain relatively high, any additional rainfall could introduce a renewed flood risk in those basins.
✏️The public is urged to remain vigilant, as localized, sudden showers could still cause minor inundation of low-lying areas and roads.
ℹ️River Basin Updates:
✏️Mahaweli River: Water levels, specifically at the Nawalapitiya and Peradeniya stations, are gradually decreasing.
✏️Kelani River: In the upper basin, water levels at Kitulgala and Norwood are gradually decreasing. Although Kitulgala showed a very slight increase, it is not at a dangerous level. Lower basin levels at Avissawella, Glencourse, and Hanwella are also dropping, showing no signs of flood development.
✏️Kalu River: The water level at Ratnapura is gradually decreasing, along with downstream stations such as Millagawa, Ellakanda, and Putupaula. There is no increased flood risk indicated for this basin.
✏️Gin & Nilwala Rivers: These basins received very little rainfall yesterday and today (less than 25 mm), and there is currently no flood risk.
✏️Maha Oya & Attanagalu Oya: Water levels in both basins are steadily decreasing and are currently not at an alert level.
