(Her Lens: Resilience and Reflection)، الذي تنفذه مؤسسة كانديد (Candid Foundation) بدعم من وزارة الخارجية الألمانية (German Federal Foreign Office)، وبشراكة مع جمعية Agir Ensemble.
Essaouira Hosts an International Photography Exhibition Celebrating Memory and Resilience Through the Lenses of Five Women Photographers from the Arab World
On Friday, August 1, 2026, Dar Souiri Exhibition Space in Essaouira inaugurated the international photography exhibition "Perspectives from Reality... Moments That Tell Our Stories", which will remain open until August 15, 2026. The exhibition offers a compelling artistic experience that brings together documentary photography and human memory while highlighting the work of women photographers from the Middle East and North Africa.
The exhibition features the work of five documentary photographers: Lamees Koujan from Syria, Rola Khayyat from Lebanon, Mariam Janini from Jordan, Syrine Barouni from Tunisia, and Amal Moutaouakil from Morocco. Through their individual visual projects, each artist explores themes of memory, identity, belonging, and social transformation, presenting deeply personal and thought-provoking artistic perspectives.
Curated by Thana Faroq, the exhibition is titled "Memory, Unfinished." It represents the latest chapter of a journey that began in Tunis and now continues in Essaouira, exploring how memory is constructed, revisited, and continuously reshaped through the creative process itself rather than solely through the final photographic image. Visitors are invited to engage not only with the finished works but also with the notes, archives, visual fragments, and creative processes that shaped each project, offering a rare opportunity to look beyond the image and reflect on its making.
The featured projects address themes including displacement, domestic spaces, inherited silence, absence, and both personal and collective memory. Drawing on personal archives, text, observation, and visual experimentation, the artists examine the relationship between lived experience and documentary photography, questioning what an image can preserve when memory remains fragmented, unresolved, or still in the process of becoming.
The exhibition's opening ceremony featured a Gnawa musical performance, celebrating the dialogue between visual arts, music, and Morocco's rich cultural heritage in the presence of artists, cultural practitioners, and photography enthusiasts.
The exhibition is presented as part of Her Lens: Resilience and Reflection, a programme implemented by the Candid Foundation with the support of the German Federal Foreign Office, in partnership with Agir Ensemble Association. The programme aims to support women documentary photographers across the Middle East and North Africa by amplifying women's voices through visual storytelling that documents memory, lived experiences, and resilience while fostering intercultural dialogue.
Open to the public until August 15, the exhibition is expected to attract photography enthusiasts, art lovers, researchers, students, and members of the wider public. As one of Essaouira's major cultural events this summer, it further reinforces the city's reputation as a vibrant platform for artistic dialogue, cultural exchange, and international creative collaboration.
