Historically all matters relating to Moldova have always fallen under the remit of the Embassy of Ireland in Bucharest, Romania. As part of Ireland's desire to expand its global footprint, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade have opened an Honorary Consulate in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova in April 2019.

On the 9th April 2018, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Mr Simon Coveney named Dr Suzanne O’Connell as Honorary Consul for this office and presented the seal of office. On the 11th February 2019 Dr O’Connell was presented with the Exequatur by the Department of Foreign Affairs and European Integration in Moldova for the term of 5 years.

Ambassador Derek Feely traveled to Moldova in April to oversee the opening of the Honorary Consulate which coincides with the 20 year anniversary of Irish - Moldovan bilateral relations. We have always had a robust and supportive working relationship which we would like to not only continue but also expand on and we look forward to further collaboration on all levels.
