While the phrase "31 realms" does not appear as a single compiled checklist in any single early discourse (sutta), the Buddha explicitly spoke about all 31 individual planes of existence.

Evidence of these realms is scattered comprehensively across the Pali Canon. The list was later structurally categorized into 31 specific planes within the Abhidhamma Pitaka and systematic commentaries.

The primary scriptural evidence establishing that the Buddha taught these realms is structured below through the three overarching worlds (The Tridhātu):
1.The Sensuous World (Kāma-loka): 11 Realms
The Buddha detailed these realms across numerous discourses, dividing them into four lower realms of suffering, the human realm, and six sensual heavens.
The 4 Lower Realms (Apāyabhūmi): In the Bālapaṇḍita Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 129), the Buddha provides descriptions of Hell (Niraya), the Animal realm (Tiracchāna), and the Hungry Ghost realm (Peta). The Asura (Titan/Demon) realm is frequently detailed alongside them in suttas like the Mahāsamaya Sutta (Digha Nikaya 20).
Anumodana Sankalpa
The Human Realm (Manussa-loka): Mentioned universally as the unique plane where moral choices and enlightenment are most accessible.
Anumodana Sankalpa
The 6 Deva Heavens: In the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Samyutta Nikaya 56.11), the Buddha explicitly names the six sensual heavens in ascending order as they rejoiced over his first sermon:
Cātummahārājika (Four Heavenly Kings)
Tāvatiṃsa (The Thirty-Three, ruled by Sakka)
Yāma
Tusita (Where Bodhisattvas reside before their final birth)
Nimmānarati (Delighting in creation)
Paranimmitavasavatti (Wielding power over others' creations)

2. The Fine-Material World (Rūpa-loka): 16 Brahma Realms
The Buddha directly mapped these 16 heavenly planes to the attainment of the four material meditative absorptions, known as Jhānas.

1st Jhāna Realms (3): Brahma-pārisajja, Brahma-purohita, and Mahā-brahma. In the Brahmajāla Sutta (Digha Nikaya 1), the Buddha recounts how a being falls from higher realms to become a Maha Brahma, mistakenly believing he created the universe.
2nd Jhāna Realms (3): Parittābha, Appamāṇābha, and Ābhassara. In the Aggañña Sutta (Digha Nikaya 27), the Buddha states that when the physical world contracts/destroys, most beings are reborn in the Ābhassara (Streaming Radiance) realm.

3rd Jhāna Realms (3): Parittasubha, Appamāṇasubha, and Subhakiṇha.

4th Jhāna Realms (7): Vehappala and Asaññasatta (unconscious beings), followed by the 5 Pure Abodes (Suddhāvāsa). In the Mahāpadāna Sutta (Digha Nikaya 14), the Buddha explicitly states that he mentally traveled to the five Pure Abodes (Aviha, Atappa, Sudassa, Sudassī, and Akaniṭṭha) to meet the gods who were non-returners (Anāgāmis) from past Buddhas.

3. The Formless World (Arūpa-loka): 4 Realms
In the Mahānidāna Sutta (Digha Nikaya 15) and the Saṅgīti Sutta (Digha Nikaya 33), the Buddha details the "planes of beings" and explicitly links the highest 4 formless dimensions to the four formless meditative attainments (Arūpa Jhānas):

Ākāsānañcāyatana (Infinite Space)
Viññāṇañcāyatana (Infinite Consciousness)
Ākiñcaññāyatana (Nothingness)
Nevasaññānāsaññāyatana (Neither Perception nor Non-Perception)

Core Evidence of the Framework
In the Sammādiṭṭhi Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 9), Venerable Sāriputta teaches the cosmic framework directly spoken by the Buddha, explicitly dividing all existence into three types of becoming (Bhava): Kāma-bhava (sensual), Rūpa-bhava (fine-material), and Arūpa-bhava (formless). When you add up the specific sub-planes mentioned by the Buddha across the Suttas (11 + 16 + 4), they equal exactly the 31 planes of existence.
