Hajj Day Message
Today, 28th May 2026, marks the observance of the sacred festival of Eid al-Adha, celebrated with deep devotion by Muslims across the world.
According to Islamic belief, the Hajj commemoration symbolises the unwavering faith and unparalleled sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim in devotion to Almighty Allah. The observance holds special significance as the pilgrimage to Mecca is regarded as the fifth of the five great obligations of Islam.
In a world increasingly affected by conflict and division, the Hajj festival offers a profound example of the importance of human solidarity and mutual compassion. I firmly believe that this gathering, where Muslims from all corners of the world come together irrespective of race, nationality or social standing to perform religious rites in unity, conveys to humanity a powerful message of equality and brotherhood.
Furthermore, even amidst the difficulties currently faced by the world due to the conflict situation in the Middle East, Muslim devotees undertaking the pilgrimage to Mecca continue to commemorate the immense sacrifice and devotion demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim throughout his life.
The vision of our Government, too, is to build a compassionate and harmonious society founded on peace, unity and selflessness rather than selfishness. As we pursue this journey, I urge all citizens to embrace more closely in their lives the values embodied by the Hajj celebration, peace, brotherhood and sacrifice.
As we continue to enrich Sri Lankan society with spiritual values and move forward together in a spirit of brotherhood towards building a developed nation where the benefits of progress are shared by all, I extend my heartfelt wishes to the Muslim community in Sri Lanka and across the world for a blessed Eid al-Adha.
Eid – Mubarak!

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar participated in the opening ceremony of the solemn three-day commemorative ceremony marking the 70th Anniversary of the historic Sixth Buddhist Council, held with the chairship of the Mahasangha and the President of Myanmar, at the revered Maha Pasana Cave Ordination Hall in Yangon, on 30 April 2026.
The ceremony, organized by the Government of Myanmar, brought together the Most Venerable Maha Sangha from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, and Lao PDR, along with government representatives, diplomats, and devotees, reflecting the enduring significance of this landmark event in the preservation and propagation of Theravada Buddhism.
In conjunction with this important occasion, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Yangon, on request, undertook a special religious initiative on 01 May 2026, by donating the Buddha Jayanthi Sinhala Tripitaka Compilation to the Department for the Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, under the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture of Myanmar. The three first volumes of Thripitaka were presented symbolically, during the occasion. This invaluable collection of sacred scriptures will be housed at the “Sri Lanka Madura,” located within the premises of the Maha Pasana Cave Ordination Hall—an area specially designated to symbolize the longstanding spiritual and historical ties between Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
This offering was made in commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Sixth Buddhist Council, with the noble aspiration of contributing to the preservation, study, and wider dissemination of the teachings of the Gautama Buddha. It also serves to further strengthen the deep-rooted religious, cultural, and historical bonds shared between the peoples of Sri Lanka and Myanmar, both of which are steadfast custodians of the Theravada Buddhist tradition.
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka, together with officials of the Embassy, the Director General and representatives of the Department for the Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, and members of the Sri Lankan community residing in Myanmar, attended the ceremony. Their participation underscored Sri Lanka’s continued commitment to fostering Buddhist cooperation and promoting shared spiritual heritage, and cultural cooperation, at both regional and international levels.

The working people of Sri Lanka mark this year’s May Day at a decisive moment, as the country secures significant economic achievements despite a challenging global climate shaped by conflict.
Even amid major challenges such as United States tariffs, Cyclone Ditwah and the conflict in the Middle East, we have safeguarded the security of our overseas workers by upholding Sri Lanka’s longstanding humane and non-aligned foreign policy. At the same time, through effective responses to natural disasters, we have recorded notable economic progress in 2025. These include the lowest budget deficit since 1977 and the highest government revenue since 2007. Export earnings from goods and services exceeded USD 17 billion, making it the only year to surpass revenue targets while also recording the highest foreign remittances in our history. I extend the nation’s sincere gratitude to the working people whose contribution made these achievements possible.
Recognising the true value of labour, we have implemented policies to uplift working people. These include increasing public sector basic salaries, raising private sector minimum wages and granting pension rights to public servants recruited after 1 January 2016. Plantation workers’ wages have been increased to Rs. 1,750 and legal provisions relating to women’s night-time employment have been amended. The Mahapola scholarship has also been increased by Rs. 10,000 to support the education of workers’ children. In addition, we have extended benefits across society, including to farmers, fishers, youth, women, students, producers, small-scale entrepreneurs and plantation communities.
The recent Cyclone Ditwah most severely affected the working population. In response, we provided the highest disaster compensation in our history, alongside relief for farmers, fishers and small and medium-scale industries. Through the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” programme, we are expediting housing construction and restoring livelihoods, raising living standards beyond previous levels.
Our primary objective is to safeguard the rights of the working people in this nation and to create a more stable economy and a brighter future for our children, rather than allowing them to endure suffering, tears and pain. We acknowledge that it is essential to modernize human society, the economy, and production systems to align with the constantly evolving productive forces and the changing environment, making this a crucial task. Key initiatives include the proposed education reforms, the digital economy programme, the Clean Sri Lanka initiative and the ‘Prajashakthi’ programme.
As we strive to recover lost development and build “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life”, we place our confidence in the working people of Sri Lanka as the driving force of this journey. With that conviction, we continue to work while learning and learn while working, towards steady progress. I warmly invite all working people to join this collective effort with commitment and integrity in building a better nation and I extend my best wishes for a meaningful May Day.
