The Brahman and Three rogues

In the forest of the prophet Gautoma there was a certain Brahman who had determined to make a sacrifice. He purchased a goat, for the sacrifice, from a neighbouring village and returned home, carrying it on his shoulder. On the way, he was perceived by three rogues. Then, the rogues said to one another,- "If we can by same artifice get the goat from that man, it will be a great proof of our wit-superiority." Saying this, they sat down separately under the three trees which were a krosa (a mile) away from each other, looking for his arrival.
Soon after, one of them said to the Brahman who was going.- " O Brahman! Why do you carry a dog on your shoulder?" The Brahman replied, - " No, it is not a dog; it is a goat for sacrifice." Then, the second rogue stationed at the distance of a krosa
(a mile) repeated the same question. On hearing which, the Brahman, putting the goat upon the ground, examined it again and again; and at length, replacing it on his shoulder, he went on, wavering in his mind. Then, the Brahman having heard the third rogue, like the former two, was convinced that it was indeed a dog; and so, having left his goat behind him, he took bath and went home. Then, the rogues took the goat away and made a feast of it. Therefore, I say,_
✿" He who, comparing others to oneself, believes a knave to be a person of veracity, is deceived; as the rogues cheated the Brahman out his goat." (as the Brahman is cheated of his goat, by the rogues.)
