Electricity’s catalytic role in Myanmar’s growth.
The return to a democratic form of government after 50 years of autocratic rule has kindled the hopes and aspirations of the
people of Myanmar. The new government has to undo the wrongs of the past and has to make rapid strides in the right
direction to make up for lost time. One of the things the government needs to focus on is fixing the economy and kick‐starting rapid growth that is broad based and equitable.
Myanmar has grossly underinvested in several areas that are critical to and the form the foundation of every economy. One
such area is electricity. Myanmar has consistently underinvested in the electricity sector. The sector has the potential to play a catalytic role in kick‐starting rapid economic growth. It also has the potential to fundamentally transform the lives of the people of Myanmar. Myanmar has the opportunity to learn from the experiences of other countries and to put in place a contemporary architecture for its electricity sector.
When one looks at a contemporary architecture for the electricity sector one needs to look at generation, distribution and consumption individually and collectively. One also needs to look into emerging realities like distributed generation of power, micro‐grids, electric vehicles etc
