On the occasion of the World Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, the Embassy of the Netherlands 🇳🇱 in Myanmar and 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇨🇿 🇪🇺 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇳🇴 🇪🇸 🇨🇿 🇸🇪 🇨🇿 🇬🇧 reiterate their commitment to defending the rights of le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r and intersex (LGBTIQ+) people and the fight against all forms of violence and discrimination against them.

The targeting of LGBTIQ+ persons is not a minority issue but a part of a broader trend of shrinking civic space, restrictions on press freedom, growing corruption and the undermining of democratic institutions.

As the first country that adopted marriage equality and adoption rights for same-sex couples in 2001, the Netherlands stands firmly for the protection and promotion of equal rights for LGBTIQ+ persons and works together with other countries to defend equality for everyone.

Everyone should be able and free to be themselves, no matter who they are and who they love.

စက်သုံးဆီချွေတာဖို့ ခြေလှမ်းတစ်ရပ်အနေနဲ့ စက်ဘီးစီးတဲ့ သံတမန်တွေ။

ဖေဖော်ဝါရီ လကုန်ပိုင်းက စပြီး မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှာ စက်သုံးဆီတွေ စျေးတက်ပြီး ပြတ်လပ်မှုနဲ့ ကြုံခဲ့ရပါတယ်။ လူအများစုက ကားဆီဖြည့်ဖို့အတွက်၊ ကောက်ပဲ သီးနှံ ရိတ်သိမ်းဖို့အတွက်နဲ့ သူတို့ရဲ့ ထွက်ကုန်တွေကို စျေးအရောက် ပို့ဖို့ သယ်ယူပို့ဆောင်ရေးအတွက် ဆီဝယ်ဖြည့်နိုင်ဖို့ ရုန်းကန်ကြရပါတယ်။

“ကျွန်တော် မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ မလာခင်တုန်းက နေ့တိုင်း ရုံးကို စက်ဘီးစီး သွားတယ်။ မိုးပဲ ရွာရွာ နှင်းပဲ ကျကျ ကျွန်တော်က ရေလုံတဲ့ ဝတ်စုံ ဝတ်ပြီး စက်ဘီးစီး ရုံးတက်တယ်။
"မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှာတော့ စက်ဘီးစီး ရုံးတက်နိုင်ဖို့ တခြားနည်းတွေကို သုံးဖို့ လိုပြန်ပါတယ်။ ဒီမှာက စက်ဘီးနင်းသူတွေအတွက် သီးသန့် သတ်မှတ်ပေး ထားတဲ့ လမ်းမရှိတော့ ကားကြပ်တဲ့ လမ်းမကြီးတွေကို ရှောင်ဖို့ လမ်းသွယ်လေးတွေကို သုံးရတယ်။ အိမ်ကနေ စောစောထွက်ရတယ်။ အားကစား ဝတ်စုံဝတ်ရတယ်။ ရုံးမှာ ရေချိုးလို့ ရတော့ ကံကောင်းတယ်။ ရုံးကလူတွေ မရောက်ခင် ကျွန်တော် ရေမိုးချိုး၊ အဝတ်အစားလဲ ကုတ်အင်္ကျီ ဝတ်ပြီး အလုပ်လုပ်ဖို့ အဆင်သင့် ဖြစ်နေပြီ။

Cycling diplomats: a small step to reduce fuel use

Since the end of February, Myanmar is facing steep fuel price increases and shortages. Many people are struggling to pay for fuel in their car, to harvest their crops or to transport their goods to markets. Reducing fuel use was one of the reasons our Deputy Head of Mission, Wim van Doorn, has decided to go to the office by bicycle as much as possible: “I had been thinking about cycling to work since I arrived in Myanmar. The heat, questions about safety, and needing to go to meetings in my suit were some of the reasons that I never did it. However, when I saw the impact of the fuel crisis, I felt I needed to contribute something as well.”

Cycling to work is normal in the Netherlands. More than half of the people that live within 5 kilometers of their work go there by bicycle even in bad weather.
Wim said, “Before coming to Myanmar, I also cycled to work every day. For rain or snow, I would have waterproof gear with me. In Myanmar, I need to adapt in other ways: as there are no bike lanes, I use small streets and avoid the busy main roads. I leave home early and dress in a sports outfit. I am lucky that I can shower in the office. Before everybody else arrives, I get dressed up in my suit, ready for the day. Cycling uses less fuel, reducing pressure on fuel availability. It saves money and is better for the environment. I also see more of daily Myanmar life in the streets, and it is healthy: the 25 minute bike ride is my daily exercise”.

“I know it is only a small contribution, but I believe that it shows solidarity with the people that are really struggling. Every little step to reduce fuel consumption can add up.”

Safeguarding free, independent and diverse media- both online and offline-is fundamental to the development of inclusive, peaceful and democratic societies.

In Myanmar, press freedom is under severe pressure. Since 2021, independent media have been forced to close down or leave the country. Journalists and media workers have been threatened or arrested just for doing their work. Among them, Sai Zaw Thaike, a photojournalist, has been serving a long prison term merely for covering the situation aftermath of a devastating cyclone in Rakhine in 2023, without due process. Recently, we have also seen worrying reports of revocation of publishing licenses of several independent media which include ethnic media outlets in Chin State.

While we acknowledge the release of some journalists in the amnesties early this year, we call for the release of all journalists and media workers who still remain in prisons.

As a strong advocate for press freedom, the Netherlands remains committed to supporting the freedom of the press in Myanmar and elsewhere.

Today, 28 March, marks one year since the massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake with an epicentre in Mandalay, Myanmar, which killed more than 3.800 people, injured more than 5.000 and caused approximately USD 11 bln in damage. On this day, we commemorate the victims of this terrible disaster and express our solidarity with those that continue to suffer the consequences.
Within 48 hours after the earthquake, 🇳🇱the Dutch Relief Alliance was on the ground to provide support to the victims, with financial support from the Government of 🇳🇱the Netherlands. With our support, thousands of people were provided with food and non-food items including safe drinking water, sanitation to prevent diseases, and shelter.
Services for mental health and psychosocial support are critical to rebuild families. Through several partner organizations, 🇳🇱the Netherlands provided mental health services to the children and families who have lost their beloved ones, their homes or their income.
