Chargé d'Affaires Ken Toko and Defense Attaché Cmdr Brett Kirwan honored the memory of U.S. Sergeant Irving Newman, the only American servicemember whose remains have been recovered in Maltese territory. Nearly 80 years after his B-24 Liberator attempted an emergency landing off the coast of Malta on May 6, 1943, Sgt. Newman was finally brought home and laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, thanks to the extraordinary work of Professor Timmy Gambin and his team at the University of Malta. During this special event hosted by Heritage Malta, we learned about the underwater discovery and recovery operation from Prof. Gambin and through a Virtual Reality experience. As we commemorate Memorial Day and 250 years of American independence, we remain committed to accounting for every lost servicemember and honor the unique historical ties between the United States and Malta.

Ambassador Farkas recently opened an advanced money laundering training program for our Maltese law enforcement partners. From May 11-15, the IRS–Criminal Investigations division, in partnership with the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and the Department of Justice , delivered specialized training on anti-money laundering and financial investigations. Police officers, financial analysts, and prosecutors participated in an intensive five-day workshop, working through complex case scenarios, learning to identify beneficial owners of stolen assets, recognize money laundering typologies, trace funds through layered transactions, and coordinate cross-border investigations. The INL-funded OPDAT Resident Legal Advisor provided the prosecutor’s perspective through case-based guidance to the participants. The United States values its strong partnership with Malta in our shared efforts to combat financial crime.
