"L-iktar ħaġa importanti hu li taċċetta. Jien aċċettajt li rrid ngħix ta’ għami. Aċċident li kelli bil-karozza ħallini nieqes mid-dawl. Wieħed u tletin sena ilu, kont Għawdex u raġel li kien qed isuq taħt l-effett tal-alkoħol, daħal fiha, inqlibt bil-karozza u bid-daqqa li ħadt f'rasi, tlift id-dawl t'għajnejja. Miegħi kien hemm żewġ persuni oħra li nirringrazzja lil Alla, ma ġralhom xejn.

Sibt sapport minn b***a b'mod speċjali mill-familja. Kelli nitla' l-Ingilterra biex joperawni. Minn dak inhar 'il quddiem, ridt naċċetta ngħix bħala persuna għamja. Fatt tajjeb huwa li għadni ħaj. Dak li seħħ lili ma nistax inħassru bit-tipex. Ingħalqitli triq imma jiena fittixt li nsib triq oħra. Għalkemm persuna nieqsa mid-dawl, iżżewwiġt u għandi tifla ta' disa' snin. Jiena persuna li ma qtajtx qalbi. Dejjem nipprova. Illum jiena l-president tat-Torbal Society for the Blind.

Intoppi nsib u nsib bil-b***a. Fost l-intoppi li jiena u sħabi nsibu nsemmi l-imbarazz u l-boroż taż-żibel li jitħallew jiġru fin-nofs tal, bankina, scooters mitluqa bl-addoċċ, il-ħmieġ li jħallu n-nies tal-klieb għax ma jiġbruhx, il-fatt li meta niġu biex naqbdu karozza tal-linja ma nkunux nafu liema rotta waslet biex nirkbu. U bħalissa qed niġġieldu l-battalja tal-karozzi elettriċi li ma tismagħomx għaddejjin. Dawn huma ftit mill-ħafna li jkollna nħabtu wiċċna magħhom ta' kuljum. Frustrazzjoni.

Jiena tgħallimt nuża l-bastun. Il-computer u l-internet għeni ħafna. U nsib ħafna nies li jfittxu li jgħinuk. Inħobb il-mużika u għinitni ħafna. Inħobb il-futbol, inħobb il-Liverpool, u għalkemm għami, ma qtajtx qalbi biex immur Anfield, u ltqajt mal-plejers ukoll." – Joe Micallef

"The most important thing is acceptance. I accepted that I must live as a blind person. I lost my sight after a car accident. Thirty-one years ago. I was in Gozo and a driver under the influence of alcohol crashed into me. My car overturned and with the impact I suffered to my head I lost my eyesight. The two passengers who were with me escaped unharmed thank God.

I found a lot of support especially from family members. I had to go to England to be operated on. From that day on I had to accept that I had to live my life as a blind person. The good thing is that I am still alive. What happened to me cannot be erased. A road was closed but I searched for another. Although I do not have my eyesight I got married and have a nine-year old daughter. I never gave up. I always try. Now I am the president of the Torbal Society for the Blind.

I face hurdles, too many of them. Amongst these are the litter and garbage bags which my friends and myself have to face in the middle of the streets and on pavements, scooters left lying carelessly. Dog litter which people do not pick up. The fact that when we need to catch a bus we do not know which route is due. And at the moment we are fighting the challenge of electric cars which are silent as they pass by. These are but a few of the hurdles we need to face daily. Frustrations.

I learnt how to use a stick. The computer and the Internet have been a huge help. And I meet a lot of people who want to help. I love music and this has helped me a lot too. I love football and Liverpool and although I am blind I did not give up on going to Anfield where I also met the players." - Joe Micallef
