Malta heads to the polls this Saturday and while many voters know who they want to vote for, not everyone knows that the way you write your numbers can actually affect whether your vote is considered valid.

Unlike other countries where voters simply place an X next to a candidate, Malta’s electoral system requires voters to rank candidates using numbers starting from 1.

That means no ticks, crosses, shading or random marks on the ballot paper.

Numbers should be written clearly and neatly inside the boxes next to your chosen candidates. Avoid cursive style writing and avoid crossing the number 7, as unclear markings could result in your ballot being marked as dubious and needing further review.

Any markings that do not follow Malta’s electoral rules could potentially invalidate the vote.

So if you want your voice to count this Saturday, make sure your ballot is filled in properly.
