⚠️ Graphic Images Alert ⚠️
Today is a sad day for us.
In the afternoon, we received a call about a dead turtle in St Julians. Two of our volunteers went on site to check and take measurements, and once there, they confirmed that the turtle was microchipped.
Upon checking the microchip number, we confirmed it was turtle Nathalia.
Nathalia had arrived to our rescue team on 27th April 2025 with a severe injury to her front left flipper from a boat propellor strike. The flipper needed immediate amputation, but over the following months, Nathalia had adapted well to swimming with a missing flipper, and was released on the 20th of December 2025.
Unfortunately, it looks like her cause of death could be another boat injury.
We have taken Nathalia to our rehab centre, to await a necropsy to confirm 100% the cause of death.
We're so saddened by this. After months of rehabilitation and adaptation, being released back is the ultimate goal.....only to have humans cause another injury, this time fatal.
Rest easy Nathalia, we're sorry we (humans) have let you down.
All the animals we rescue are protected species and it is illegal in Malta to keep them as pets.
Our volunteers have wildlife handling permits and training as well as equipment in order to rescue these creatures. If you spot any of the wild animals that we rescue injured or in danger, please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.
🙏 A massive thank you always goes to the public who call us when they notice an animal in distress, our vets, and our dedicated rescue and rehabilitation volunteers.
Donations are always welcome and can be sent by bank transfer or Revolut transfer on our Wildlife IBAN

We are incredibly grateful to Lions Club Mdina -Malta Host for their support in this fundraising activity for Sami’s loggerhead marine turtle tank.
Sami’s Journey 🐢
Sami was rescued in November 2021. She was found entangled in marine debris which caused severe injuries, resulting in the loss of one flipper and significant damage to two others. Due to these disabilities, Sami cannot be released back into the wild, as survival would not be possible in such conditions.
As Sami will be permanently housed at the Xrobb l-Għaġin Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre rather than undergoing temporary rehabilitation, we aim to provide her with a larger enclosure that offers improved conditions, including increased space and access to natural UV light. This upgrade will create a more comfortable and effective long-term care environment tailored to her needs. Additionally, the new enclosure will allow us to test tracking devices designed for turtles that have lost flippers due to injury and may later be released. Once these turtles are released with trackers, the data collected will help us better understand their movements and journeys, while also enabling us to monitor their safety and ensure they are navigating successfully despite despite the loss of a flipper.
A heartfelt thank you to the Lions Club Mdina -Malta Host for their generous contribution in supporting this project and to our corporate sponsor BOV

It was a pleasure to have students from Maria Regina College Mosta Secondary, Ex Lily of the Valley visit us today. The students were so keen and interested in learning about what we do. It gives us great joy in knowing that the next generation is wants to care and protect our environment.
