The Pursuit of Oblivion
Richard Davenport-Hines
A history of drug taking, telling the story across five centuries of addicts and users; monarchs, prime ministers, great writers and composers, wounded soldiers, overworked physicians, oppressed housewives, exhausted labourers, high-powered businessmen, playboys, s*x workers, pop stars, seedy losers, stressed adolescents, defiant schoolchildren, the victims of the ghetto and happy young people on a spree.
It is also the history of one bad idea, prohibition.

Only A Mother Could Love Him
Ben Polis
How I lived with and triumphed over ADHD
Ben Polis attended 6 different schools, served -he estimates- over 3,000 hours of detention and drove his entire family into counselling. But against all odds, with a combination of selftaught concentration techniques and sheer determination, he made it through the education system to university. This is his triumphant story - and a remarkabel look inside the mind of a person with ADHD. From his unique perspective, Ben describes what it's really like to feel those constant inexplicable impulses, to get all that medication, to desperately want to be 'normal'.
Ben's inspiring, frank and often funny account will enlighten every parent who's ever despaired of their seemingly uncontrollable child; every teacher who's ever vented frustration at a student who just won't pay attention; every kid who has ever pondered 'Why does everyone hate me?' and indeed anyone who wants to understand the world of an ADHD child.

Gomorrah - Italy's Other Mafia
Roberto Saviano
In the spring of 2006, what began as a reporter's investigation of Neapolitan organized crime made international news headlines. Vigilante journalist Roberto Saviano compiled the most thorough account to date of the Camorra, the Neapolitan mafia, which exerts malign influence on contemporay Italy. At great personal risk, Saviano worked undercover in his native city in Camorra-controlled factories, construction sites and even as a waiter at a mob wedding. He recalls seeing his first murder at the age of 14, and how his own father, a doctor, suffered a brutal beating fro trying to aid an 18 year old victim who had been left for dead in the street.
Unforgettable and utterly compelling, Gomorrah is a nightmare journey into a world of devastating brutality.

The Blood Detective
Dan Waddell
'The past isn't like that; you can't just bury it, mark it down as history. It's taken more than 125 years, but the events of 1879 have finally washed up...'
It's not the best start to DCI Grant Fosters day: standing over a mutilated body in a windswept London churchyard. Although the killer has left a cryptic and brutal clue.
It is only when the clue is handed to Nigel Barnes, a specialist in compiling family trees, that the full message becomes spine-chillingly clear. For it leads Barnes back more than 100 years - to the victim of a demented Victorian serial killer...
When a second body is discovered, Foster needs Barnes's skills more than ever - because the murderer's clues appear to run along the tangled bloodlines that lie between 1879 and now. And if Barnes is right about his blood-history, the killing has only just begun...
