The Chadwick Lakes project conserves the natural resources of Wied il-Qlejgħa and create an innovative venue which highlights the ecological value of the valley and promotes natural heritage tourism.

Along the trail at Chadwick Lakes, you’ll come across zones where invasive plants have been carefully removed. It’s part of an ongoing effort to protect the local ecosystem. These plants are dried and composted, returning nutrients to the soil in a sustainable way.

There’s more happening at Chadwick Lakes than meets the eye. Thanks to restoration work carried out by the Energy and Water Agency along with other partners, invasive species have been cleared and native trees are now thriving

𝐍𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰-𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐀𝐬𝐡 – 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐱𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐚 – 𝐢𝐥-𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐱𝐱𝐧𝐮

The Narrow-leaved Ash, known locally as il-Fraxxnu, is a tall tree that grows in valleys around Chadwick Lakes. 🌳 This fast-growing tree can reach up to 45 meters tall with a trunk as wide as 1.5 meters. It produces flowers in spring, which are pollinated by the wind. The tree's seeds are also carried by the wind, allowing it to spread across the area.

The Narrow-leaved Ash was historically used as a fodder tree for livestock in southern Europe, and its presence at Chadwick Lakes contributes to the diversity of the local flora.
