I tried to find the tomb of Bishop Leonardo Abela in Rome and pay my respects. He was the Bishop of Sidonia, a friend of Cardinal Santori, Vicar General of Malta, signatory to Gregorian calendar, and perhaps the Pope’s right hand man in dealing with the East (www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/leonardo-abela_%28Dizionario_Biografico%29/). It is said that he was buried in The Papal Archbasilica of St. John in the Lateran - the oldest church in the West, founded in 324 AD by Constantine. I talked with the Archbasilica’s staff, but they could not assist in providing any information. Anyway, I took some pictures of the Archbasilica. It was too sunny and I couldn’t take a quality pic from the outside!

Palazzo Abela Fact: At the time of the Second World War, Malta was so heavily bombed that people had to find their shelter underground. Palazzo Abela's water wells served as shelters and also as a church where Mass was celebrated. Special pathways in the palazzo were dug to reach the water wells, where people could find safety.

Palazzo Abela was originally built as a summer residence for one of the most educated and prominent Maltese who has ever lived - Citizen of Rome, Monsignor Don Leonardo Abela. He is the only Maltese buried at the Papal Archbasilica in the Vatican City, Basilica of St. John Lateran. He passed away on May 2, 1605.

Rooftop maintenance completed. We are blessed to have over 100 years old trees that guard the entrance of the palazzo and the St. Bartholomew church that is right across from us -- just a few meters across the narrow street.

Palazzo Abela Fact: Palazzo Abela was built from 1562 to 1564. However, just a year after being built, it faced its first adversity. The Ottoman Empire invaded Malta in 1565 and set up one of their headquarters at the palazzo. It may have been that because of this invasion Bishop Abela asked, according to some stories, for a secret tunnel to be built that led from the palazzo to the Mediterranean Sea, in case of another invasion.
