Today, Grade 3 students from Mohamed Jamaaludheen School visited the Fuvahmulah Nature Park. During their visit, the students participated in an engaging and immersive learning session about the diverse plant and bird species found in the wetlands. They learned about the characteristics and differences between various species of plants and birds and had the opportunity to observe several bird species in their natural habitat. This experiential learning session sparked great interest and enthusiasm among the students, who thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were delighted to welcome the students and their teachers and look forward to hosting more educational visits from them in the future.

Eastern Cattle Egret (Ardea coromanda), 'Iruvaihudhu', is a migratory bird species that overwinters in the Maldives, during NorthEast (Iru’vai) monsoon. Although, you can sight them in low numbers during Southwest (Hulha’ngu) monsoon. It is small in size, measuring about 46 – 56 cm with short neck and yellow bills and usually found in dry habitats than other egrets, but can be found in shallow wetlands as well. Its plumage differs from breeding season and nonbreeding season. Such as it has bright orange plumes on its crowns, necks and breasts during their breeding season, whilst it has entirely white plumes during their nonbreeding season.
Historically, Maldivians relied on the arrival of eastern cattle egret as it signifies the change of monsoon. Unfortunately, it is very popular among poachers and sold as pets. As of now, eastern cattle egret is a bird species protected under the Environmental Protection and Preservation Act (4/93). It plays a role in maintaining a balanced ecosystem by preying on insects & arachnids etc., let’s protect this visitor to our island and enjoy its magnificence in its true habitat.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Fuvahmulah City Council organized a bamboo planting program followed by an information session on air layering. Students from the Environmental Clubs of local schools actively participated in this event.
During the program, students learned bamboo planting techniques and were introduced to the process of air layering, a method of propagating new trees from a parent plant. The session provided knowledge aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable greening efforts.
Students were encouraged to share these techniques with their peers, practice air layering on their own, and contribute to a greener future by planting and nurturing trees within their homes.
This event served as a meaningful opportunity to inspire young environmental advocates and foster a deeper appreciation for nature and conservation.

On the occasion of World Environment Day, the Fuvahmulah City Council conducted a series of awareness sessions for school students. The sessions were centered around this year's World Environment Day theme, "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future."
These sessions focused on educating students about climate change, its impacts on the environment and society, and the importance of protecting natural ecosystems as a means of mitigating its effects. Students were also introduced to various nature-based solutions implemented in different countries to address climate-related challenges and promote environmental sustainability.
The initiative aimed to enhance students’ understanding of environmental issues and inspire them to play an active role in protecting nature and building a more sustainable future.
