Police assure safety for people with albinism
Malawi Police Service(MPS) has assured people with albinism of their safety and security, saying the law enforcers will continue to arrest anyone targeting them.
Speaking today May 27, 2026 at Chilembwe Village, Traditional Authority Masumbankhunda in Lilongwe at the funeral of Chipiliro Laston, a 45-year old man with albinism who was killed in March this year, Deputy Director of Community Policing Superintendent Alexander Ngwala said one suspect is already under police custody and two other suspects are still being hunted down.
Ngwala said it is worrisome that relatives are behind the killings, stressing that there is no market for albinos' body parts.
He, therefore, called on the mourners to explore honest means of earning money rather than targeting those people with albinism due to superstitions.
Senior Group Village Head Samuel, who represented Senior Chief Masumbankhunda, and legislator for the area Peter Dimba commended the police for arresting Laston's killer.
They both pleaded with the villagers to hold their patience for the police to conclude their investigations.
Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi(APAM) President Young Muhamba also hailed the police for the swift action and pledged to work with the police to ensure that justice is finally served for Laston's murder.
The Regional DCP[Deputy Commissioner of Police] Mrs Micklina Medi, Lilongwe Police Station Officer in Charge Mrs Patricia Njawiri ACP[Assistant Commissioner of Police] were in attendance along with officers from the Central West Region, C-Division, Lilongwe, Kawale, Lingadzi and Kanengo.
