CHAMPIONS CROWNED AS NATIONAL SKILLS COMPETITION ENDS IN LILONGWE
The 2026 National Skills Competition has successfully concluded at Gateway Mall in Lilongwe, with outstanding competitors receiving awards for their exceptional performances across various trades. The competition once again demonstrated the power of technical and vocational skills in shaping Malawi's future and producing the skilled workforce needed to drive national development.
Speaking during the event, Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Joel Chigona MP, emphasized that skills development remains a key priority in Malawi's development agenda. He encouraged young people to embrace technical and vocational training, describing skills as a critical tool for building the nation and creating opportunities for economic growth. The Minister also called on more young women to participate in future competitions, stressing that talent and excellence know no gender.
TEVETA Board Chairperson, Gilbert Chilinde acknowledged the challenges facing the skills sector, particularly the shortage of equipment in some training institutions, but assured Malawians that efforts are underway to address the gap. He highlighted recent support received from international partners and reaffirmed TEVETA's commitment to ensuring that trainees have access to modern equipment that reflects industry standards.

Secretary for Labour, Skills and Innovation, Nwazi Mnthambala, has called for increased collaboration between Government and the private sector to support the development of TEVET programmes that respond to the evolving needs of industry. She said private sector involvement is critical in aligning training programmes with market demands and equipping students with relevant skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
Mnthambala made the remarks when she presided over the opening of the Public Private Skills Dialogue Forum (PPSDF), a multi-stakeholder platform that brings together Government through the Ministry of Labour, the private sector, and training institutions. She said, “Skills development is a shared responsibility that cannot be done by Government alone; deepened partnerships and exchange of ideas are critical in achieving MW2063.”
Echoing Mnthambala’s remarks, Chairperson of the PPSDF, Godwin Ng’oma, said the forum provides an opportunity for the industry to communicate the skills and expertise they require, which ultimately supports the production of TEVET graduates who are competent and adaptable to the needs of the industry.
Held under the theme “Bridging Skills and Jobs: Harnessing Labour Market Information Data for a Responsive TEVET System,” the forum brought together 100 participants from the industry, Government, and training institutions.
