LA ESCONDIDA: A STORY OF RESILIENCE AFTER THE RAINS

Deep in southern Yucatán lies a small community called La Escondida, home to just 36 families and 30 children. It is a place few people know about, but for the families who live there, the recent heavy rains have changed daily life.

Days of intense rainfall flooded homes, turned roads into rivers of mud, and left many families struggling to protect what little they own. Mattresses, clothing, food supplies, and household belongings were damaged by the water. For families already living with limited resources, recovering from a flood can be overwhelming.

Yet amid the hardship, something powerful has emerged: compassion.

Our team from Los Mayas Eternos has been visiting communities across southern Yucatán, delivering clothing, food, and emergency assistance to families affected by the flooding. Every bag of clothes, every food package, and every helping hand reminds these families that they have not been forgotten.

The children of La Escondida continue to smile and play despite the challenges around them. Their resilience is a reminder that hope survives even in the most difficult circumstances.

This is only one of many communities we are helping. Hundreds of families throughout southern Yucatán continue to need support as they recover from the rains. Together, we can help provide relief, dignity, and hope.

We are all one. Everything is interconnected. When we help one family, we help strengthen our entire human family.

In the south of Mérida, many families are suffering after days of heavy rain and flooding. Entire communities lost clothes, mattresses, food, and the little they had. Many children are sleeping in wet homes or temporary shelters, and some families are trying to survive with almost nothing.

But in the middle of all this pain, angels appear.

People like David Rogers and many other expats and foreign friends have become part of this mission. They help collect clothes, distribute food, carry eggs, rice, beans, milk, tarps, and hope to the forgotten communities. During Christmas, they become like Santa Claus for hundreds of Maya children, bringing toys, shoes, smiles, and moments of happiness to places where sadness is everywhere.

We are working every day visiting flooded areas and poor neighborhoods in the south of Mérida and nearby villages. We are helping children, single mothers, elderly people, and families who escaped violence and poverty looking for a safer life.

Right now we urgently need clothes in good condition for children and adults. Many families lost everything under the water.

To all the Americans, Canadians, and foreigners helping us: thank you. You are true angels for our people. Your kindness is changing lives in places that many people never see.

Together, we can bring dignity, food, clothes, and hope to the children of the south.

Historic rains are hitting southern Mérida and many communities across Yucatán. Hundreds of families are now living with flooded homes, damaged belongings, mud, humidity, and loss of basic necessities like clothes, mattresses, shoes, and food.

The weather remains unstable with strong storms continuing across the region, and many families still need urgent help.

With Los Mayas Eternos, we are entering the communities to deliver clothing, food, eggs, bread, water, and support to families who lost almost everything.

Today we are asking for something simple:
used clothes in good condition, shoes, blankets, tarps, toys, food, and anything that can help a family start again.

Many people lost absolutely everything.

Dear friends:

The south of Mérida is currently facing an emergency due to heavy rains, which have severely affected many communities.

In 22 villages, families are dealing with flooding and the loss of essential belongings. Urgent support is needed, especially in food, clothing, and protective materials.

We are requesting donations of food, clothing in good condition, and tarps, to help families shelter and meet their basic needs.

With just 3 dollars, we can bring bread and eggs to one family, providing at least two meals.

We are also especially concerned about 15 elderly people living alone in Las Tunas.

The first delivery will take place this Monday. Every contribution goes directly to the affected communities.

Dear friends and members of Los Mayas Eternos of Chelem and the coastal area:

We would like to express our deep gratitude to Linda Karp for her continued support over many years in the collection and delivery of donations along the coast.

Linda is a person with a big heart who has traveled through these communities with love, commitment, and respect. Her work reflects the care and solidarity that many people share toward the Mayan communities.

We continuously receive clothing, shoes, toys, and blankets in good condition to support 22 villages in the south of Mérida, a project we have sustained for more than 5 years.

At the end of deliveries along the coast, we would also like to recognize her ongoing monetary support, close to 1,000 blankets, her time, her ideas, her listening ears, and her unfailing presence as Los Mayas Eternos continues to serve families in need.

This effort comes from love for the children and families of our Mayan communities. Every donation helps build well-being and hope.

Los Mayas Eternos Bringing Hope to Southern Mérida

In the southern neighborhoods of Mérida, where dirt roads turn into mud after the rain and many families survive with only the bare essentials, a white truck moved slowly beneath the intense Yucatán sun. In the back were bags of donated clothing, boxes of shoes sorted by size, walkers, canes, and several wheelchairs carefully secured with ropes.

It was another humanitarian day for Los Mayas Eternos.

From early morning, volunteers arrived from different parts of the city. Some were young students, others were foreigners who had found a second home in Yucatán, and some were elderly people who understood what difficult times truly feel like. Nobody was paid. Everyone came carrying something — clean used clothing, diapers, shoes in good condition, or simply their time and energy to help.

In one of the forgotten communities of southern Mérida, families were already waiting beneath improvised tarps trying to escape the heat. Children ran barefoot through puddles and rocks while mothers held medical papers and photographs of sick relatives, hoping to receive a wheelchair or walker.

An elderly woman named Doña Lupita could not hold back her tears when volunteers placed a blue wheelchair in front of her. For nearly two years, her sons had carried her from place to place. That morning, for the first time in a long while, she was able to move on her own again.

A few meters away, a young boy hugged a pair of black sneakers as if they were treasure. He quietly said he had never owned “real shoes” to wear to school.

For hours, volunteers continued sorting mountains of clothing into women’s, men’s, baby, boys’, and girls’ categories. The nicest clothes quickly found their way to the people who needed them most. At times there was silence. At others, laughter, hugs, and conversations in the Mayan language filled the air.

This was not simply the distribution of donations.

It was dignity.

It was a reminder that there are still people willing to see the suffering of others and respond with compassion.

As the sun slowly disappeared over Mérida, the volunteers continued working covered in dust and sweat. Exhausted, but deeply aware of something important: in a world often dominated by indifference, entire communities are still surviving because of small acts of collective love.

And in the forgotten streets of southern Mérida, it became clear that a bag of clothing, a pair of shoes, or a wheelchair can change far more than just a single day.

It can restore hope.
