In Photos: NASA’s Juno Finally Sends Back Images Of Jupiter And Its Moon After Radiation Spike

More photos have been returned to Earth from NASA’s Juno spacecraft that show the beauty of the giant planet Jupiter and its little lava-encrusted moon Io.

As the solar-powered spacecraft completed its 47th close pass (perijove) of Jupiter on Dec. 14 it attempted to return its science data to NASA, but the downlink was disrupted.

After an initial return of just one image—of its volcanic moon Io—the rest of the raw data of Io and Jupiter appeared online on Jan.4. Since then a team of image processors—all of them dedicated volunteer “citizen scientists”—have posted online a bunch of spectacular finished images.

The delay was caused by a radiation-intensive portion of Jupiter’s magnetosphere, according to NASA. Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory rebooted its onboard computer and put the spacecraft into safe mode.

Stocks making the biggest moves premarket: General Electric, Salesforce, Alibaba and more

General Electric
— GE HealthCare Technologies
begins trading as a separate company on the S&P 500 Wednesday. GE, in 2021, revealed plans to break up into three companies so it can focus on its aviation business. It plans to spin off its energy segment in 2024. Shares of GE were up about 2% in premarket trading.

Salesforce
— Shares of the cloud giant rose about 2% in early trading after the company announced a restructuring plan that includes cutting its staff by about 10% and the closure of some offices.

Chinese ADRs – Shares of Chinese companies listed in the U.S. jumped after Ant Group received approval to expand its consumer finance business in a sign of progress in resolving regulators’ concerns. Alibaba
, which owns 33% of Ant, and JD.com
rose more than 6% in the premarket. Pinduoduo added 4.5%.

Microsoft
— Microsoft shares dropped about 2% after UBS downgraded the tech giant to neutral from buy. UBS cited concern over the company’s Azure and Office businesses following a series of field checks.

Corning
— Corning got a 2.5% lift after Credit Suisse upgraded the shares to outperform from neutral and raised revenue estimates, noting headwinds could change to tailwinds in 2023.

Target
— The retail giant lost 1.3% after Wells Fargo downgraded the stock to equal weight from overweight. The firm said Target’s “outlook has deteriorated” and the stock is not an attractive investment amid broader economic uncertainty.

Merck
— Merck’s stock rose about 1.7% after being upgraded to buy from neutral by Bank of America. Analysts cited the company’s consistent revenue upside, as well as the substantial progress it has made strengthening its cancer drug Keytruda’s position and softening the impact of when it goes off patent

Pfizer
— Shares of the pharma giant were down about 1.4% after being downgraded by Bank of America to neutral from buy. Among the reasons for the call was the uncertainty over the magnitude of the revenue decline for its Covid drugs, Comirnaty and Paxlovid.

J.B. Hunt Transport Services
— Shares of the transportation and logistics company fell nearly 2% in early trading after UBS downgraded the stock to sell, predicting that earnings will be flat to modest in 2023 and will show a “real cyclical decline.”

AstraZeneca
— The pharmaceutical giant saw a 1.8% lift in its shares after the European Medicines Agency validated its Type II Variation application for the treatment of a “non-small cell lung cancer.”

Honeywell
— Shares of Honeywell slipped 1.8% in the premarket after being double downgraded by UBS to sell from buy. The firm said shares are at a premium and it’s anticipating an order slowdown.

Tesla
— Shares gained 1% in the premarket. The stock dropped 12% Tuesday, a day after the electric-vehicle maker reported missing expectations on fourth-quarter delivery and production numbers.

Coinbase settles with New York state financial regulator for $100 million, stock spikes

Coinbase
settled a case with New York’s state financial regulator, the parties announced Wednesday, and will pay a $50 million fine and invest a further $50 million in compliance efforts. Regulators from the New York Department of Financial Services said the company had longstanding failures in its anti-money laundering program.

Coinbase shares closed up over 12% on the settlement news. The company is the only publicly traded cryptocurrency exchange in the United States. Coinbase disclosed the regulatory probe in its 2021 10-K filing with the SEC.

The latest enforcement action comes after both state and federal regulators have ramped up efforts following the November collapse of FTX, once one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world.

Major players such as Grayscale Bitcoin Trust rely on Coinbase to custody their assets in cold storage, and the company prominently touts its compliance and security efforts in SEC filings and online. The exchange holds licenses across the United States and globally.

“This agreement includes a $50 million penalty and a separate commitment from Coinbase to invest $50 million in our compliance program over two years,” Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal said in a statement.

Regulators wrote that Coinbase’s compliance shortcomings led to “suspicious or unlawful conduct being facilitated through Coinbase’s platform,” according to the consent order.

In one case, a Coinbase customer who had been charged with “crimes related to child sexual abuse” was not flagged by Coinbase’s system when the user joined the exchange, regulators wrote. For over two years, regulators say, the user engaged in “suspicious transactions potentially associated with illicit activity without detection.” Coinbase ultimately identified the user, closed out the account and reported the activity to law enforcement.

The company said it has committed to rectifying the issues identified by regulators. Coinbase’s leadership team has long been pushing for broader and clearer regulations for the crypto space.

“Despite the prevailing notion that crypto companies don’t want to be regulated, many — if not most — companies have been working with policymakers for years,” Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong wrote in an op-ed for CNBC.

Coinbase, like much of the tech industry, was forced to pare back head-count growth and capital-intensive projects, trimming 18% of its workforce in summer 2022. The layoffs came after a decline in the user base and a 27% revenue drop year over year.
