How Swiss precision is helping predict extreme weather from space 🇨🇭🛰️
At the heart of Europe’s next generation weather satellites lies a small but powerful Swiss innovation.
Engineers at CSEM developed an ultra precise mechanism onboard the European Space Agency’s MTG satellite, scanning the atmosphere from 36,000 km above Earth to capture real time data on temperature, humidity and gases.
This helps improve the early detection of storms, heatwaves and heavy rainfall 🌩️

Swiss waste management is designed to influence behavior 🚮
The system is based on the “polluter pays” principle: households are charged according to the amount of waste they produce 🪙
In most regions, this is implemented through official taxed garbage bags, which must be used for household waste. Prices and regulations vary by canton and municipality, and the bags are available in retail stores.
At the same time, recyclable materials such as glass, PET and paper can typically be disposed of separately at no additional cost, either through collection services or designated drop-off points. ♻️
This structure creates a clear incentive to sort waste and reduce residual disposal. As a result, Switzerland’s recycling rate exceeds 50%.
