At the recent Velesto Energy Berhad Supplier Engagement Day 2026, discussions took place on how procurement can evolve beyond cost optimisation to drive performance across the OGSE ecosystem.

This was further explored in a panel session on “Procurement Powering Performance”, where Ezwan Zakaria, Vice President, President/CEO Office of MPRC, alongside Sazlyna Sapiee, Chief Financial Officer of Velesto Energy Berhad, and Khazimad Yusof, Director, Wells of Chevron Malaysia. Moderated by Andrew Dana Wesley, Head of Sustainability of Velesto Energy Berhad, the session explored how procurement decisions today influence outcomes far beyond price, shaping ex*****on, reliability, innovation, and sustainability.

Panellists also addressed on‑the‑ground realities faced by vendors, particularly SMEs, including access to financing, payment cycles, and the complexities of scaling within a capital-intensive, fragmented market. With sustained upstream activity and capital expenditure ahead, there was clear alignment on the need for better risk‑reward sharing, clearer expectations and stronger collaboration across the value chain.

We also valued the insights shared by industry experts Ir. Ts. Megat Zariman Abdul Rahim, President of Velesto Energy Berhad, Mohd Razali Kamin, Senior General Manager, Group Procurement of PETRONAS and Zul Shameer Shaik Ibrahim, General Manager, Procurement of Velesto Energy Berhad, whose perspectives on industry challenges and opportunities reinforced the importance of continued stakeholder engagement.

Thank you to Velesto Energy Berhad for convening this meaningful session. MPRC looks forward to continuing to engage closely with OGSE companies to strengthen collaboration and unlock greater value across the ecosystem.

The ASEAN Power Grid (APG) represents more than cross-border electricity interconnections. It reflects ASEAN’s broader ambition to build a more integrated, resilient, and lower-carbon regional energy ecosystem — one that will play an increasingly important role in supporting renewable energy integration, strengthening energy security, and meeting the region’s growing electricity demand.

For Malaysia’s Oil & Gas Services and Equipment (OGSE) industry, the APG also presents strategic opportunities to diversify into adjacent sectors such as grid infrastructure, subsea cabling, digitalisation, and renewable energy integration by leveraging existing engineering, project delivery, and infrastructure capabilities.

Through the Growth Beyond OGSE (GBO) initiative, MPRC continues to support Malaysian OGSE players in exploring new growth areas and positioning themselves within the evolving regional energy landscape.

Resilience and competitiveness are no longer aspirational goals; they are national imperatives. As we navigate an era where volatility is the only constant, Malaysia’s OGSE industry stands as a strategic cornerstone of economic strength, energy transition, and social stability.

Guided by the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021–2030 Mid-Term Review (OGSE Blueprint MTR), the industry is being deliberately shaped toward a clear and ambitious target of RM50 billion in OGSE GDP contribution by 2030. This trajectory is already taking form, anchored by an ecosystem of nearly 4,000 licensed OGSE companies and marked by RM39.4 billion in GDP contribution in FY2024, according to the OGSE Census 2024, reflecting steady progress despite global uncertainty and ongoing industry headwinds.

Yet the industry’s true value is not captured by economic figures alone. It is reflected in the 123,000 jobs created and the 100,000 households supported across Malaysia. By strengthening livelihoods, enabling local participation, and reinforcing supply chains, the OGSE industry plays a vital role in Malaysia’s circular economy while driving positive social outcomes.

As custodian, MPRC drives the OGSE Blueprint MTR and its initiatives as a roadmap to navigate this uncertainty and secure Malaysia’s energy future. Learn more about how the OGSE Blueprint MTR is empowering a resilient, competitive, and sustainable industry: https://bit.ly/4iwbFTl

Malaysia’s OGSE sector must continue to evolve to remain competitive in a rapidly changing energy landscape.

At the PETRONAS OGSE Partners Day 2026, industry leaders came together to deliberate on strengthening the industry’s resilience and long-term competitiveness. It was emphasised that sustained progress requires capability development, strategic collaboration, and new growth opportunities to expand Malaysia’s OGSE footprint in emerging and adjacent energy markets, in line with the National OGSE Industry Blueprint 2021–2030 (OGSE Blueprint).

As an agency of the Ministry of Economy, MPRC continues to play a catalytic role in advancing the OGSE ecosystem, shaping both where Malaysia’s OGSE stands today and where it must head, while reinforcing competitiveness and resilience as national imperatives aligned with the energy transition and long-term industrial development.
