🇯🇵 Trends in Japan

Ukiyo-e, Japan’s woodblock print craft, is most commonly associated with HOKUSAI Katsushika (1760–1849), whose The Great Wave off Kanagawa (ca. 1830–1832) is considered one of the most recognizable artworks in the world. While these works remain central to its legacy, ukiyo-e has always been rooted in the present moment. Today, contemporary artists apply ukiyo-e’s bold compositions and woodblock techniques to modern subjects.

Contemporary ukiyo-e applies Edo-period woodblock techniques to modern imagery, preserving a traditional craft while reflecting today’s culture.

【Consul-General Attends UTP Japanese Cultural Festival 2026】

On September 30th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, attended the Japanese Cultural Festival 2026 held at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in Seri Iskandar, Perak, and interacted with Mr. Mohamed Firouz Asnan, President of UTP, members of the Japanese Cultural Club and students.

The festival was organised mainly by students of the UTP Japanese Cultural Club and featured a wide range of displays and activities introducing Japanese culture, including calligraphy, origami, kendama, yukata, hina dolls, traditional boys’ festival decorations, manga and traditional Japanese games, as well as food and beverage booths offering ramen, gyoza and matcha. The Consulate-General also set up a booth introducing Japanese culture. A UTP student who had undertaken an internship in Japan also shared what she had learned through her research and daily life in Japan, including the concepts of “omotenashi,” “omoiyari” and “ho-ren-so.”

Mr. Machida toured the festival booths with members of the Japanese Cultural Club and interacted with students on Japanese culture and manga. He also exchanged views with members of the Club on participation in Japanese cultural events in Penang, including Bon Odori and Yosakoi, their future activities and plans to visit Japan. 【Consul-General Visits the Straits & Oriental Museum】

On September 29th, Mr. Shinya Machida, Consul-General of Japan in Penang, visited the Straits & Oriental Museum in George Town, where he received a briefing from Mr. Ooi Wei Ming, Founder of the Museum, and Dato’ Peter Cheah on the establishment of the Museum, its collections, and the history of maritime trade in Southeast Asia.

The Straits & Oriental Museum is a private museum featuring Chinese ceramics, historical documents, coins, furniture and works of art, including many items collected by Mr. Ooi over more than 20 years. Its exhibits include coins and documents relating to the early history of Penang, ceramics from the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and Tang dynasty figures, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of China and Southeast Asia through authentic artefacts.

A particular feature of the Museum is its collection of Chinese ceramics recovered from several shipwrecks in Southeast Asian waters, illustrating the history of maritime trade linking China, Southeast Asia and Europe. The collection also includes Chinese ceramics formerly held by collectors in Japan. Mr. Machida and his hosts also exchanged views on the historical links between Chinese ceramics brought to Japan and the development of Japanese tea culture and ceramics.

Mr. Machida noted that the Museum provides an interesting perspective for understanding the history of Penang not only from the British colonial period onward, but also within the broader history of exchanges between Asia and the wider world, and expressed his hope that the Museum would become better known among visitors from Japan. The Consulate-General of Japan in Penang will continue to deepen its understanding of Penang’s history, culture and heritage, while working to promote further cultural exchange between Japan and Malaysia.
