KUCHING, 30 September 2026 โ The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) has strengthened efforts to develop Sarawakโs bamboo industry by organising a Bamboo Nursery Management and Maintenance Course held from 29 to 30 September 2026.
The two-day course, held in conjunction with World Bamboo Day 2026, brought together 37 participants from government agencies, academic institutions, industry organisations and local communities.
The training focused on strengthening participantsโ knowledge and practical skills in bamboo nursery management and maintenance, particularly in producing healthy and quality planting materials to support the expansion of bamboo cultivation in Sarawak.
Participants included representatives from STIDC, Research and Development Movements of Singai (REDEEMS), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Bintulu Port Sdn. Bhd., Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU), the Forest Department Sarawak, Komuniti Sinar Budi and other participating organisations.
With this yearโs World Bamboo Day theme, โBamboo Beyond Borders,โ the training reflects the growing importance of knowledge sharing and capacity building in developing bamboo as a sustainable resource with economic and environmental potential.
Well-managed nurseries play an important role in ensuring a reliable supply of quality planting materials, particularly as Sarawak targets the development of 30,000 hectares of commercial and community-based bamboo plantations by 2030.
STIDC has been supporting the development of bamboo as an alternative raw material and as part of efforts to strengthen the stateโs green economy. The sector also offers opportunities for downstream development and the production of higher-value bamboo-based products.
Bamboo can be used to make products such as tissue paper, packaging, textiles and biochar. Local and international companies have also shown interest in investing in the sector.
Through training, knowledge sharing and collaboration with industry and other stakeholders, STIDC continues to build the capabilities needed to support the sustainable growth of Sarawakโs bamboo industry and create greater opportunities for communities.
