Free Tree Society Kuala Lumpur attended the GEF Small Grants Programme Malaysia National Conference from 1 to 2 April 2026, joining partners and peers in advancing conversations on long term landscape conservation, collaboration, and community driven stewardship.

Together with Malaysia Nature Society and fellow Strategic Grantees, WormingUp and PACOS Trust, the session highlighted how partnerships across regions, knowledge systems, and communities are shaping more resilient and connected landscapes.

A key focus was the Rantaian Urban Green Spaces (RUGS) initiative, supported by Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme and United Nations Development Programme. Since 2023, the project has been working towards strengthening ecological connectivity across the Klang Valley, guided by traditional ecological knowledge and in collaboration with Indigenous communities from Bukit Lagong and Tasek Bera.

The conference also introduced Operational Phase 8 (OP8), outlining the next phase of work in biodiversity conservation, sustainable production, and landscape resilience. While the programme expands into new areas, efforts within the Klang Valley will continue to play an important role in demonstrating how urban spaces can support biodiversity and community resilience.

At Free Tree Society, we remain committed to supporting this vision on the ground, contributing to the restoration and connectivity of urban green spaces across key sites including Pulai Trail.

🌿 RUGS Roots & Routes Knowledge Fair Closing Ceremony Recap 🌿

What an inspiring way to wrap up February at the RUGS Roots & Routes Knowledge Fair, together with the grantees of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme.

From exhibition booths to Flash Talks and guided nature walks, we also ran a mini plant giveaway which many of you loved. The day brought together organisations, communities, and nature enthusiasts, highlighting the importance of collaboration in protecting and restoring urban green spaces.

Rantaian Urban Green Spaces (RUGS) is a conservation initiative that brings together community-led efforts, civil society organisations, government bodies, city councils, and grassroots groups to collectively safeguard, rehabilitate, and connect fragmented green spaces across the Klang Valley.

While the closing ceremony marks the end of this chapter, the work at Pulai Trail will continue, with partners and communities working together to restore, protect, and strengthen this vital urban forest.

Here’s to growing knowledge, nurturing nature, and deepening connections between people and the landscapes we share 🌳

Intern Spotlight: Ian 🌿

There’s nothing like hands-on experience to understand what urban restoration truly means.

For Ian, his internship was more than just time on site. It was about learning what it takes to care for green spaces, work as a team, and show up consistently. And apparently… discovering that you get a better sleep after a full day outdoors. 😂

Watch the full video to hear about Ian’s internship experience in his own words.

Thank you, Ian, for your dedication and energy.

Checking in at Bangsar Sports Complex 🌿

Last October, we planted 280 native plants at the Bangsar Sports Complex in partnership with , alongside volunteers from , , and members of the public, all united to grow a greener city.

But it doesn’t stop at planting day. We return regularly to check on the plants, carry out maintenance, and make sure they’re settling in well. 🌱

Restoration is a long-term commitment. It takes monitoring, care, and stewardship to ensure that what we plant today continues to thrive tomorrow.

If you live or work around the Bangsar Sports Complex, we welcome you to join us in caring for this space. Community stewardship makes all the difference.

🌿 SKBP EcoRIMBA Trail Gotong-Royong

Imagine a forest trail nestled within school grounds — a space where students can explore, discover, and build a deeper connection with nature every single day.

The Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Pantai (SKBP) EcoRIMBA Trail is more than just a green corner of the campus. It is a living classroom — a vibrant outdoor learning space where lessons on biodiversity, conservation, and ecology come alive beyond textbooks. 🌿

In collaboration with SKBP, its PIBG, and our FTS-Pulai Trail team, we worked together to enhance and strengthen the trail. Native species were planted to enrich biodiversity, pathways were cleared and improved, and safety features were added to ensure students can learn and explore with confidence. Every effort contributes to making the trail greener, safer, and more inspiring for young minds.

This is not a one-time initiative. Ongoing care and maintenance are essential to ensure the EcoRIMBA Trail remains a thriving educational space and a protected habitat for local wildlife.

If you would like to be part of this meaningful effort, we welcome you to volunteer with us. Reach out at [email protected] to get involved and help us keep the SKBP EcoRIMBA Trail healthy, vibrant, and inspiring for both students and nature.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue growing this living classroom together. 🌿

The Final Bangsar Ecological Connector Native Plant Giveaway is done is done - with 5,000 new natives planted! 🌿

Thank you to everyone who showed up, picked up native plants, and played a part in greening homes and shared spaces across Bangsar. Every plant given out supports the Bangsar Ecological Connector (BEC) by strengthening habitat links between Pulai Trail and Rimba Ilmu, helping pollinators, birds, and other urban wildlife move and thrive within the city. 🐝🦋🌳

While this marks the final BEC-focused giveaway, our work does not stop here. Restoring and maintaining urban ecological connections is an ongoing effort that requires continuous care, participation, and community support.

Our regular plant giveaways continue! Visit the Bangsar Nursery on Tuesdays or Saturdays, between 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM, to collect native plants and be part of this long-term effort to grow and sustain greener, healthier urban spaces together.

Thank you for helping us reconnect nature in the city, one plant at a time. 💚
