A dynamic and forward-looking discussion was held on 30th April 2026 with the Director General of Health, bringing together key stakeholders across Malaysiaโs healthcare and regulatory ecosystem. The focus was clear: strengthening the regulatory and governance framework for regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy to ensure clinical applications remain safe, ethical, and grounded in robust science.
The session explored current regulatory approaches, emerging access pathways, and opportunities to deepen stakeholder engagementโfostering meaningful dialogue and a shared vision for the future.

๐ข Training Highlights:
The training began with an overview of the need for a laboratory quality management system. It provided participants with an understanding of the MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standard. The session also covered the application process and resource allocation, as well as the concept of measurement uncertainty and its practical application. Participants were guided on how to apply this knowledge in mechanical and physical testing, as well as calibration laboratories, to meet the requirements of ISO quality management systems.

๐The Institute for Medical Research (IMR), through the Infectious Disease Research Centre (IDRC), successfully organised the IMR Rickettsial Disease Symposium 2026 on 28 April 2026 via Google Meet ๐ป. The symposium was held in conjunction with the 4th National Rickettsial Serology Workshop, bringing together experts in infectious diseases, laboratory diagnostics, and research across Malaysia ๐ฒ๐พ.
๐ค The event was organised by the IMR Rickettsial Team from the Bacteriology and Acarology Unit, IDRC, led by Dr. Siti Roszilawati Ramli and was officiated by Dr. Rozainanee Mohd Zain, Head of the IDRC. The opening speech highlighted 100 years of IMRโs contributions to rickettsial research, which reflects IMRโs long-standing commitment to advancing diagnostics and improving public health outcomes.
๐งฌ IMR has served as the national reference centre since the 1980s, with continuous advancements in diagnosticsโfrom the ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ซ๐๐๐ญ ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐จ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฑ๐ข๐๐๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฒ, to the upgraded ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐จ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐จ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฒ in 2025, and the introduction of ๐๐ข๐๐ค๐๐ญ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ in 2022. Another successful Dengue Alliance & Joint Steering Committee Meeting, the 6th, in New Delhi, 21 โ 24 April 2026 where global partners came together with one shared mission: to close the dengue treatment gap and accelerate solutions from discovery to delivery.
๐คThe ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ is more than a collaborationโit is a co-created, country-led platform uniting South-South endemic nations, researchers, and global partners to drive new dengue therapeutics, diagnostics, and access strategies. From preclinical breakthroughs to Phase III clinical trials, the Alliance is shaping a future where dengue is not just managed but treatable.
๐ฒ๐พMalaysia continues to play a pivotal role by contributing to scientific discussions, clinical trial readiness, biomarker development, and regional policy dialogue. Our team actively shared insights on surveillance, integrated vector control, and health system resilience, while also supporting clinical and translational efforts that bring innovations closer to patients. The team was led by Datuk Dr Fariza Ngah, with Dr Ami Fazlin Syed Mohamed, Dr Steven Lim Chee Loon and Dr Mohd Ridzuan Mohd Abdul Razak. Datuk ended the co-chairing term handing the baton to Prof Prasert from Thailand.

Dr. Nurul Izzah binti Ahmad joined the IMR in 1996 and was one of the longest serving officer at the Environmental Health Research Centre (EHRC). For the past three decades, she devoted her career in making substantial contributions to environmental health through her work in exposure assessment, food safety, and human health risk evaluation.

As she officially retires on the 24th of April, her dedication, rigor, and impact leave a strong foundation for future research and policy development at IMR concluding an extraordinary chapter as a distinguished scientist, leader, and mentor.
As she embarks on this next chapter, the management and staff of IMR extend our sincerest appreciation for his 30 years of service. Your contributions have made Malaysia safer, and your mentorship has inspired a new generation of scientists.

On 22 April 2026, the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) had the distinct honour of welcoming ๐๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ซ๐ก๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐๐ญ ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐ซ๐ข ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐๐ซ ๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ก ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ข๐ณ๐๐ก ๐๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ข ๐๐๐ฃ๐ข ๐๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐ก, Minister of Education of Brunei Darussalam and President of the SEAMEO Council, together with her esteemed delegation, for an official visit to SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia.
The delegation was warmly and formally received by SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia and the IMR, with welcoming remarks delivered by Dr Ezalia Esa, Deputy Director of SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia, representing the Centre. This was followed by a keynote address by the President of the SEAMEO Council, underscoring a strong commitment to advancing regional collaboration in education, research, and public health across Southeast Asia.
The visit featured a series of meaningful engagements, including presentations by SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia and SEAMEO RECSAM, highlighting the Centresโ key programmes, achievements, and regional contributions. The President of the SEAMEO Council commended the strong commitment demonstrated by the Centres and encouraged continued collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing among SEAMEO member countries.
A significant highlight of the visit was the Signing of the Visitorโs Book and Token of Appreciation presentation session, symbolising the strengthening of institutional ties and mutual respect between the delegation and SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia. The token presentation served as a gesture of gratitude and recognition, commemorating the visit and reinforcing ongoing partnerships.
The programme continued with a guided tour of SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysiaโs learning facilities and laboratory exhibitions. During the tour, the delegation had the opportunity to engage with participants of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Parasitology and Entomology (PGDAPE) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Microbiology (PGDMM) 2026, while exploring exhibitions that showcased hands-on learning, diagnostic techniques, and research activities conducted under both programmes.

๐ฅ Two researchers from the Environmental Health Research Centre (EHRC) participated in the Roll-out of Climate and Resilience for Emergencies in Health Facilities Toolkit: Malaysia Resilient Healthcare Facilities (MyReHF) on 13-15th April 2026, conducted in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Ministry of Health Malaysia.
๐ This participation is in line with ongoing work by EHRC on healthcare facility vulnerability assessment to climate change in Malaysia.
๐ The workshop brought together stakeholders to review, test, and refine the MyReHF toolkit, supporting the assessment of emergency readiness and climate resilience in health facilities.
