The Acarology Unit, Institute for Medical Research (IMR), was invited as a speaker and facilitator at the Taklimat Pembangunan Profesional Berterusan (CPD): Kawalan Penyakit Scrub Typhus dan Bengkel Persampelan Chigger 2026, held on 15 October 2026 in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan.

The SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia Convocation Ceremony 2026 was held on 16 October 2026 at Auditorium Perdana, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Setia Alam, to celebrate the achievements of 13 graduates from the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Parasitology and Entomology (PGDAPE) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Microbiology (PGDMM) programmes.

The ceremony was officiated by Dr Ami Fazlin binti Syed Mohamed, Director of the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) and Director of SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia.

Seven PGDAPE graduates and six PGDMM graduates were recognised for successfully completing their programmes. This year's graduating class comprised participants from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam and Malaysia, reflecting the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening the capacity of health professionals.

The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests and representatives from various agencies, including:

โœจ Dr Fazliana binti Mansor, Manager of the National Institutes of Health (NIH);

โœจ Dr Ainul Nadziha binti Mohd Hanafiah, Deputy Secretary of the International Policy and Relations Division (BDHA), Ministry of Health Malaysia;

โœจ Mr Heizrul bin Ali, Senior Principal Assistant Secretary, Strategic Planning and International Relations Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia;

โœจ Representatives from SEAMEO SEN and SEAMEO RECSAM;

โœจ External examiners, module coordinators, lecturers, the top management of IMR and NIH, and heads of centres and units.

The success of these programmes reflects the continued commitment of SEAMEO TROPMED Malaysia to advancing education, research and international collaboration, with the support of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the Ministry of Education Malaysia, the SEAMEO TROPMED Network, academic institutions, collaborating hospitals, research partners, external examiners, lecturers and supporting staff.

A significant highlight was the publication of the 2026 special issue of the Institute for Medical Research Journal (IMRJ), themed โ€œVector-Borne and Infectious Diseases: From Ecology to Public Health.โ€ Featuring six original research and review articles, this special issue showcases postgraduate research contributions to scientific knowledge and public health.

The Environmental Health Research Centre (EHRC) was delighted to be part of the World Environmental Health Day Celebration 2026, organised by Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) and held on the 1st October 2026 at MBSA Convention Centre, Shah Alam, Selangor.

With the theme โ€˜Berdiri Teguh Bersama Sains untuk Melindungi Komunitiโ€, the event brought together government and private sector agencies to promote environmental health and community well-being.

Represented by six EHRC team members, our booth showcased highlighted key and emerging environmental health issues, i such as microplastic pollution and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through a One Health approach. It also featured informational displays on EHRC research projects, including the Childrenโ€™s Environmental Health Birth Cohort in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (ChECKS).

Visitors also enjoyed interactive activities, including a microplastic product matching game and a handwashing experiment based on WHO guidelines to highlight the importance of proper hand hygiene in preventing the spread of diseases.

The enthusiasm and curiosity shown by school students towards environmental science was truly rewarding. Their participation made the experience both meaningful and enjoyable. Through public engagement, we hope to bridge science and the community, inspire curiosity and bring research knowledge beyond the laboratory into everyday life.

Because science is not just about what we discover in the lab, but also how we share that knowledge to protect our communities.
