There is a growing concern amongst patients who have read articles relating to the use of anti-hypertensive drugs and risk of getting COVID-19
I wish to forward here the message by our most senior cardiologist, Prof Datuk Dr. Wan Azman to reassure people on these drugs to continue taking these drugs. I hope that the public would continue to listen to professional advice over here-say social media.
From Prof Datuk Wan:
There is increasing concern on the potential adverse effects of angiotensin converting enzymes inhibitors (ACE-I) or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may increase both the risk of infection and severity of infection with Covid-19 virus. The concern arises from the observation that Covid-19 virus binds to a specific enzymes called ACE2 to infect cells and ACE2 level are increased following treatment with ACE-I and ARBs.
This speculation does not have a sound scientific evidence and The European Councils on Hypertension strongly recommend physicians and patients should continue treatment with their usual anti hypertensive therapy because there is no clinical or scientific evidence that treatment with ACE-I and ARBs should be discontinue because of COVID-19 infection.
With the recent announcement by our Honorable Prime Minister, YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, on the Restriction of Movement Order (RMO); I would like to assure everyone that University of Malaya Medical Center will remain open for business as usual, and that we will continue to treat our patients and serve the rakyat.
Although there will be some adjustment made to the schedule, appointments and other aspects of service delivery in order to comply to the need to reduce social contact (or to implement social distancing), these will be done in stages and official announcements will be made through our official channels. Please check ur website and page for the latest info
https://m.facebook.com/UMMCKL/
Please note that the government has announced a “Restriction of Movement Order” (RMO) and not a “LockDown” as most are calling it.... as a lockdown suggests that individuals are to remain home and not to leave their premises unless given permission, almost like a curfew. You are free to leave your homes and proceed to seek help if is required. Do not panic and stay calm.
UMMC would like to wish the Malaysian people all the best in these trying times, and shall continue to serve the nation the best we can.
