Sarawak General Hospital Marks Healthcare Milestone with First Targeted Radionuclide Therapy for Advanced Prostate Cancer in East Malaysia
KUCHING — Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) hit a major healthcare milestone on August 27, 2026, by successfully administering its very first targeted radionuclide therapy. It’s the first time this advanced prostate cancer treatment has ever been offered in a Ministry of Health (MOH) facility, giving local patients direct access to cutting-edge care.
This achievement comes thanks to the hard work and dedication of the SGH Nuclear Medicine Department and their multidisciplinary team. Huge congratulations go out to everyone involved for leading the way and raising the bar for public healthcare in East Malaysia.
In the past, advanced cancer treatments were unavailable locally, forcing patients in East Malaysia to fly across the South China Sea to Peninsular Malaysia. The long journey added heavy financial and emotional stress for families already going through a tough time.
"Some milestones are measured in doses, but this one is measured in distance and in the barriers our patients no longer have to cross," said Dr. Rahmat Majidi, Head of the Nuclear Medicine Department at SGH. "By bringing this treatment here, we’re removing those travel hurdles so patients can get the care they need close to home, surrounded by their family and friends."
To make sure this program continues smoothly for years to come, a team of nuclear medicine specialists, oncologists, physicists, pharmacists, technologists, and nurses met over to share expertise and build a strong foundation for future care in East Malaysia.
"When healthcare professionals, institutions, and partners unite around a shared goal, we can break down barriers and bring innovation to the people who need it most," Dr. Rahmat added, emphasizing the teamwork behind the breakthrough.
This milestone highlights SGH's ongoing commitment to making cutting-egde medicine accessible to everyone, with special thanks to the nuclear medicine team whose hard work brought this vision to life
