UM Stunting Kit Strengthens Awareness Of Child Growth

BETONG: The launch of the UM Stunting Kit through the UM-ASSIST Betong Edition 2026 programme is among the efforts to strengthen public awareness of the importance of monitoring children's growth and addressing the risk of stunting early.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development and Layar Assemblyman Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu said health monitoring, balanced nutrition and physical activity must be given attention to ensure that children grow up optimally.

"Health is the most important wealth. Apart from nutrition, physical activity and exercise are also important to ensure that children's growth and mental health are at a good level," he said.

He said this when officiating the programme at Dewan Panglima Rentap, Betong, on Saturday.

According to Datuk Gerald, stunting and obesity among children must be addressed seriously as they are closely linked to dietary practices and lifestyle.

He stressed that parents play an important role in ensuring that their children receive nutritious food, as well as encouraging physical activities suitable for their age.

Datuk Gerald also emphasised that childhood and adolescence are important phases in physical and brain development, hence continuous support from families, communities, educational institutions and government agencies is needed.

Meanwhile, University of Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares) Director Assoc Prof ChM. Dr Noraini Ahmad said the programme provides a community-friendly educational platform to increase public knowledge about children's growth and health.

She said aspects such as nutrition, physical activity, hygiene and an environment that supports development need attention as children's health also affects family well-being and the future of society.

She said collaboration between universities and communities allows knowledge and expertise to be delivered more closely through direct interaction with families and communities.

Also present was Betong Division Resident's representative Florence Bulan. -UKASnews

MDMD Urged To Strengthen Integrity, Prevent Abuse Of Power

DARO: Integrity, transparency and accountability must form the foundation of service delivery at the Matu and Daro District Council (MDMD) to ensure that every decision and administrative matter is carried out with trust and without abuse of power.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya said the local authority's staff must uphold integrity in every task, including the management of finances, records, assets and procurement.

He said integrity is not merely about complying with rules, but must be demonstrated through honesty, discipline, adherence to procedures and the delivery of services that are fair, transparent and responsible.

He said that as an agency that deals directly with the public, MDMD must ensure that the interests of the people are always prioritised in every decision and action.

He said this when officiating the MDMD Integrity Week 2026 themed "Integrity at the Core of Service, MDMD Progresses Together" at Dewan Masyarakat Daro on Thursday.

The Jemoreng Assemblyman also reminded MDMD staff to avoid abuse of power and conflicts of interest, and to make trust and accountability a continuous practice.

He welcomed the organisation of the Integrity Week, which combines elements of strengthening service ethics with aspects of health, welfare and social responsibility.

Datuk Dr Juanda hoped that the values of integrity instilled through the programme would continue to be practised in every task and action, thereby shaping responsible staff who serve as role models for the community.

Among the programme's activities were an integrity and corruption talk by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Drug-Free Workplace Programme (TEKAD) in collaboration with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Mukah Division, a mental health talk, a basic life support talk and a Blood Donation Campaign.

Also present were Daro District Officer Zul Usop, Matu District Officer Hamidah Halpi and MDMD Secretary Chiong Siew Ping. -UKASnews

282 Road Upgrading Projects Carried Out In Pujut Since 2022

MIRI: A total of 282 road upgrading and maintenance projects have been carried out in the Pujut constituency from 2022 to 2026, covering a total distance of 29.56 kilometres with an allocation of RM11.1 million.

Miri City Mayor and Pujut Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang said the projects were implemented in phases each year to improve infrastructure facilities and the comfort of residents.

He said that in 2022, 26 projects covering 8.38 kilometres were carried out with an allocation of RM2.4 million, followed by 48 projects spanning 6.95 kilometres in 2023 at a cost of RM2.776 million.

"In 2024, 81 projects involving 4.94 kilometres were carried out with an allocation of RM1.9 million, while in 2025, 113 projects spanning 4.19 kilometres cost RM2.13 million.

"For 2026, 14 projects covering about five kilometres are being implemented with an allocation of RM1.9 million," he said when speaking at the Rural Minor Projects (MRP) Presentation Ceremony for the Pujut DUN at the Pujut Community Service Centre here on Saturday.

According to Adam, the continuity of the projects shows that maintenance and infrastructure improvement works in the Pujut area are carried out on an ongoing basis, based on needs and annual planning.

Meanwhile, he reminded the public to be more vigilant against the misuse of social media, including the use of fake accounts, anonymous accounts, manipulated artificial intelligence (AI) content and cyberbullying.

He said the public needs to be more careful in evaluating social media content to prevent family members and friends from being influenced by manipulated information.

Adam also urged relevant parties, including the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), to monitor such content proactively and fairly to address social media misuse.

At the same ceremony, RM41,000 from the Minor Rural Project (MRP) allocation for Pujut was channelled to 15 associations and organisations to support various activities and the needs of the local community.

Among the recipients were the Piasau Link Traditional Archery Club, Speed Chasers Motorsports Club, Kampung Piasau Utara Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK), Miri Chinese Charitable Trust Board, Miri Innovative Recreation Club (KRIM), Miri District Education Office and the Parent-Teacher Association of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pendidikan Khas Miri. -UKASnews

Kuching Aims To Host WCF World Cat Show Again In 2027

KUCHING: Kuching is aiming to host the World Cat Federation (WCF) World Cat Show again in 2027 through a bid for the international event, in a bid to widen participation among cat lovers and enthusiasts from around the world.

Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman said the aspiration follows positive feedback from the WCF after discussions on the opportunity to hold the event in Kuching.

According to him, DBKU hopes to be entrusted once again to host the event, following the success of staging a world-class cat festival three years ago.

"Now, God willing, if we are given the trust once again, Kuching will resound and be able to make this a success on a bigger scale, with wider participation from all competitors from abroad," he told reporters.

He said this at the launch of the Kuching International Cat Festival (KICF) 2026 at the Kuching Waterfront on Saturday.

Dato Hilmy said hosting the event again has the potential to open the way for greater participation, further strengthening Kuching's position on the international cat event calendar.

Speaking on KICF 2026, he said the event faced weather constraints, as hazy conditions forced several planned outdoor activities to be cancelled and held indoors instead.

According to Dato Hilmy, the organisers had earlier planned to expand the scale of the festival, including increasing the involvement of cat lovers and owners through the cat parade, which received a positive response at last year's edition.

He said that despite the constraints, KICF 2026 still received participation from China, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

The festival, held on Oct 3 and 4, features two main programmes, namely the WCF International Cat Show and MY Cat Expo 2026. The WCF International Cat Show brings together about 200 cats of various breeds, with the competition judged by three international judges from the Netherlands, Latvia and Germany.

In addition, Meow Fiesta features 41 booths offering a variety of products and services, including food and beverages, pet products and other items for sale. -UKASnews

WAK Could Be Expanded To Bintulu, Other Areas

KUCHING: The WAK Festival has the potential to be expanded to Bintulu and other areas in Sarawak as part of efforts to develop a network of community-based creative platforms across the state.

Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said WAK's growth since it was introduced in Kuching in 2017 showed that the concept could flourish when developed together with the community.

According to him, this growth can also be seen in the staging of WAK Sibu and Miri, which are now in their third editions and have received an encouraging response from their respective communities.

"Each city develops its own identity and creative energy, while remaining connected to the larger Sarawak platform.

"Therefore, I am pleased to learn that the organisers, together with the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, are exploring the possibility of taking WAK further, including potential editions in Bintulu and other areas," he said.

He said this in a text of speech read out by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the festival's launch on Saturday.

The Sarawak Premier added that WAK's development could create opportunities beyond staging the festival, including connecting creative communities across cities, providing new platforms for artists and performers, and activating venues and public spaces.

He said the Sarawak Government therefore views WAK not merely as an events calendar, but as part of a larger creative ecosystem.

He added that every opportunity given to artists, musicians and creative entrepreneurs, including through performances, markets and collaborations, also contributes to strengthening Sarawak's creative economy.

"As WAK enters its next phase, I encourage the organisers to be more ambitious. Strengthen the links between Kuching, Sibu and Miri.

"Explore Bintulu and other communities when the time is right. Develop more Sarawak talent. Create stronger regional and international collaborations, and create pathways that can bring our creative practitioners beyond Sarawak's borders," he said.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Dato Hilmy Othman. -UKASnews

Pendidikan Awal Penting Cegah Penyalahgunaan Dadah
