Sometimes, what our elders need is not someone to do everything for them.
Sometimes, they need someone to believe that they can still do more. ❤️
When this lady with Parkinson’s first started her training, she needed assistance just to stand up.
After guided exercise, repeated practice and the right instructions, something encouraging happened.
She managed to stand up by herself.
She seemed surprised by what she herself was still capable of doing.
As she succeeded, you could also see her confidence beginning to grow.
But perhaps the most heartwarming moment came at the end of the session.
She asked us for more training.
She wanted to continue.
That moment meant a lot to us.
Because what we witnessed was not only an improvement in function.
It was an elderly lady discovering:
“I can still do this.”
And when someone begins to believe in their own ability again, their willingness to try can change too.
To many of us, standing up is an ordinary movement.
But for an elderly person who has gradually become dependent on others, it can represent something much bigger:
Confidence. Independence. Hope.
Too often, when an elderly person becomes weaker, we begin to think:
“Maybe this is as good as they can get.”
But that may not always be true.
Many of our elders still have potential within them that we have not yet discovered.
They may need the right assessment, appropriate exercise, repeated practice, professional guidance and encouragement — and someone patient enough to help them unlock that potential.
Of course, every elderly person is different. Not everyone will achieve the same result, and progress may be fast for some and much slower for others.
But we should never stop asking:
“What can this person still achieve?”
Caring for our elders should not only be about doing things for them.
Whenever possible, it should also be about helping them regain the ability to do things for themselves.
Because sometimes, beneath the weakness and dependence, there is still potential waiting to be discovered.
And sometimes, the most beautiful part is watching our elders discover that potential for themselves. ❤️
