A change of purpose!
When we first launched Sambal Kantan, we offered two variants, The Original - with anchovies; and the Vegetarian version. It made sense on paper. In practice, our Temuan cooks told a different story.
After handcrafting hundreds of bottles, our Temuan cooks noticed a key difference - adding anchovies was overpowering the natural depth of the Bunga Kantan flower. The saltiness after bottling the anchovies with the sambal was masking the very taste that makes our sambal unique. Taking away from the ingredients that our Temuan cooks have grown, harvested, and cooked with.
So we listened and are taking steps to return to our cultural ways...
From now on, we are sticking to the one way that Sambal Kantan is made. Our new Original Recipe will be fully vegetarian. Clean. Balanced. Truer to the traditional Temuan flavor it was meant to be. This is what indigenous cooperation looks like. Not just us deciding what's best, but listening to our people who have carried this knowledge long before we have arrived.

With all the support you've given us, we are able to make strong progress in Serendah. Reinvesting into land clearing and early construction work, which allows the community to access government housing aid. In total, there will be space for 5 new homes and 1 Orang Asli led business.

Tucked away in the green folds of Serendah lies a small village, home to the Temuan people — one of Malaysia’s indigenous tribes. Here, time moves gently, guided by tradition, forest rhythms, and shared meals.
Among the most cherished ingredients in their cooking? Bunga Kantan — torch ginger flower. Fragrant, medicinal, and deeply symbolic, it's been used for generations to flavour sambals, heal the gut, and honour the old ways.
At Community Ops, we don’t just work with this community — we learn from it. Every project, every product, every connection is a way to celebrate the knowledge and resilience of these women and their culture.
This is Kampung Orang Asli Serendah. This is the Temuan people. And we’re honoured to walk alongside them.
