On 13 October 2026, the Perdana Leadership Foundation held a Majlis Tahlil in memory of the late Tun Dr Hasmah Hj Mohd Ali, bringing together family and friends, guests, and members of the PLF community for an afternoon of prayers and remembrance.

The gathering provided an opportunity to come together in prayer, honour her memory and reflect on the life of a remarkable woman whose kindness, warmth and dedication to serving others touched the lives of many.

We were also honoured by the presence of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, accompanied by his children, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, Tan Sri Mirzan Mahathir, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, alongside our Chairman, Tan Sri Azman Hashim, and members of PLF Trustees, as we came together to offer our prayers for the late Tun Hasmah.

May Allah SWT forgive her shortcomings, accept her good deeds and grant her the highest place in Jannah. May her lifelong contributions to the nation and the kindness she extended to all who knew her continue to be a source of amal jariah for Tun Hasmah.

Al-Fatihah.

A Beloved Familiar Presence at PLF

Over the years, Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali was a familiar and cherished presence at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, as she graced our programmes or attended to her own engagements at PLF. Every encounter with her on these occasions felt personal and special.

Some of these encounters were captured in photographs, which have since become part of PLF’s archives, preserving her connection with the Foundation over the years. As we revisit these photographs, we remember not only the occasions they document, but also the warmth, wit, and grace that Tun Hasmah brought with her wherever she went.

TUN DR HASMAH'S FLOWERS
Grace and Elegance Eternalised through Flowers

Allahyarhamah Tun Dr Hasmah Hj Mohd Ali loved flowers and nature. It is fitting, then, that her name lives on in bloom: orchids and hibiscus have been cultivated and named in her honour; each one a quiet tribute to a woman whose presence touched countless lives.

In 1984, the UK Royal Horticultural Society cultivated the Papilionanda Doctor Siti Hasmah orchid, honouring a pioneering female physician whose dedication to medicine helped bring healthcare and vaccinations within reach of mothers and children across Malaysia.

Almost two decades later, in 2000, her name was carried by two beautiful hibiscus variants developed by the Malaysian Nuclear Agency; Siti Hasmah RedShine and Siti Hasmah PinkBeauty. The two variants were created as part of research into the use of mutagenesis to alter or bring about new characteristics in plants.

Then in 2004, the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) cultivated the Aranda Doctor Siti Hasmah, a gesture of appreciation for her encouragement and support of orchid research in Malaysia.

In 2018, another orchid carried her name from across the Straits of Johor. The Singapore Botanic Gardens cultivated a new mutation of the Dendrobium Orchid, naming it Dendrobium Mahathir Siti Hasmah. It was presented to Tun Dr Mahathir and Tun Dr Hasmah by Singapore’s then Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as a gesture of friendship and enduring goodwill between the two neighbouring nations.

There is something especially poignant about the flowers named after Allahyarhamah Tun Dr Hasmah. They reflect the qualities she herself embodied: grace without grandeur, quiet beauty, and effortless elegance.

For many years, she was the steady presence beside Tun Dr Mahathir. Yet her own journey and contributions stand beautifully on their own: as a physician, a mother, a humanitarian, and a woman who gave so much of herself to the people of Malaysia.

Perhaps that is why flowers are such a fitting tribute to her. They bloom without fanfare, bringing beauty and joy into the lives around them, and leave something behind even after their season has passed.

These flowers remind us of a life lived with purpose, compassion, and a committment to service, and of a woman whose presence, like a beautiful garden, will continue to bloom in the hearts of those who remember her.

Al-Fatihah.

PLF-INSEAD Senior Leaders Programme: An Immersive Learning Experience

Last year, thirty-odd leaders from 19 organisations learned about Wise Power, the ability to master the deeper dynamics – not just the surface phenomena – affecting the world, an organisation, a team, an individual, guided by Prof Marc le Menestrel of INSEAD, at PLF’s Senior Leaders Retreat Programme. The two-day programme tested participants’ assumptions about the business world and about ethics through thought-provoking questions and discussions, all leading to strengthening and clarifying their leadership purpose and mission. This year, we are inviting you to gain a new and deeper perspective on Strategic Leadership and The Future of Organisations with two INSEAD faculty members, Prof Laszlo Tsonio Avramov and Prof Phanish Puranam who will explore with you the principles and strategies of successful business transformation and how you can redesign your organisation to make the most of both human and machine intelligence.

The three-day retreat for senior business leaders is fully HRDC-claimable and will take place at The Chateau Spa & Wellness Resort, Bukit Tinggi, from 1 to 3 December 2026.

Tun Dr Hasmah Mohd Ali — A Champion for Public Health

For Tun Dr Hasmah binti Mohd Ali, becoming a doctor was more than a profession; it was a calling to care for people, protect lives, and serve communities. As one of the earliest Malay women to enter the medical profession (she was the only Malay woman in her batch at King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore), her work brought her close to the needs of mothers and children, particularly in rural communities.

In 1965, ten years after her graduation, Tun Dr Hasmah became the first woman Medical Officer in the Maternal and Child Health Department, and in 1974, the first woman State Maternal and Child Health Officer in Kedah. Her work centred not only on treating illness, but also on health education, immunisation, maternal care, and the wellbeing of families.

Tun Dr Hasmah’s concern for health and wellbeing did not end with the treatment of illness. Over the years, her understanding of public health grew to encompass the wider social challenges that could threaten the wellbeing of families and communities. Among these was the growing danger of drug abuse, particularly to young people.

As President of BAKTI (Badan Amal dan Kebajikan Tenaga Isteri-Isteri), she took an active role in educating young people about the dangers of drug abuse. Her concern was not limited to treating addiction after it occurred; she advocated for prevention, parental involvement and community responsibility, recognising that protecting young people required families, voluntary organisations, the media and society to work together.

This commitment took her to Washington, D.C., in April 1985, when she accepted an invitation from U.S. First Lady Nancy Reagan to attend the First Ladies’ Conference on Drug Abuse. In her statement at the conference, Tun Dr Hasmah described drug abuse as one of Malaysia’s most serious problems and highlighted the particular vulnerability of young people. She called for a stronger parents’ movement, cooperation among voluntary organisations, a positive role for the mass media, and greater involvement from society as a whole.

The meeting with Nancy Reagan was more than a diplomatic engagement. It became part of a wider exchange of ideas on drug prevention and public awareness. The partnership continued when Nancy Reagan visited Malaysia in May 1986 as part of her international anti-drug campaign. Tun Dr Hasmah welcomed her and spoke of the importance of moving beyond enforcement towards prevention, particularly protecting schoolchildren and young people from the lure of drugs.

Her advocacy also extended internationally. In 1987, she represented Malaysia at the International Conference on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Vienna, continuing to place Malaysia’s experience and concerns within the international conversation on drug prevention.

For Tun Dr Hasmah, public health was ultimately about protecting lives before illness or harm took hold — through education, prevention, stronger families, and healthier communities. Her work demonstrates how a physician’s commitment to health can extend far beyond the clinic, reaching communities, institutions, and international platforms.

From caring for mothers and children to championing healthy drug-free youth, Tun Dr Hasmah’s legacy is one of service and of a lifelong belief that a healthier society begins with education and awareness.
