The Sabah Heart of Borneo (HoB) Initiative Townhall, held on 22โ23 October 2026, brought together representatives from government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other key conservation stakeholders to review progress, share insights, and chart the way forward for the Sabah HoB Initiative.
The Townhall served as an important platform for stakeholder, through the Mid-Term Review (MTR), to reflect, refine and recommit the Sabah Heart of Borneo Strategic Plan of Action (SPA) 2021โ2030. Participants reflected on key achievements, identified challenges and emerging priorities, and provided recommendations to strengthen the effectiveness and relevance of conservation and sustainable development efforts across the Sabah HoB landscape.
An interactive breakout session was conducted to review and finalise the Terms of Reference (ToRs) for the Sabah HoB Technical Working Groups (TWGs), covering the five focus areas of the SPA:
โข Focus Area 1: Transboundary Management
โข Focus Area 2: Protected and Conserved Area Expansion and Management
โข Focus Area 3: Sustainable Natural Resources Management and Biodiversity Conservation
โข Focus Area 4: Ecotourism Development
โข Focus Area 5: Capacity Building
The Townhall reaffirmed the shared commitment of all stakeholders to safeguarding Borneo's rich biodiversity, promoting sustainable natural resource management, strengthening partnerships, and supporting sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
The Big Takeaway: Conservation is not a solo effort. Through standardized frameworks and collective commitment, the Sabah HoB Initiative is ensuring Borneoโs ecological heart keeps beating for generations to come.
