📖 Youth Book Club, Montepuez.
6 September 2026 (2.00 pm).
This week, the Youth Reading Club is reading Chapter 1, ‘The Root of the Scar’, from the book *Scars of Violence: Marks that Speak in Silence, by Dr Nina Yengo*, which explores the structural causes of gender-based violence.
Objective: to encourage young people in Montepuez to engage in critical reflection on the roots of gender-based violence and to strengthen their skills in preventing and responding to such situations within their communities.
Current context: in 2025, Mozambique recorded 18,365 cases of GBV, with women and girls accounting for almost 80 per cent of the victims, including 40 femicides (State Secretariat for Gender and Social Action).
In Cabo Delgado, the armed conflict exacerbates this vulnerability, with over 95,000 people displaced in 2025 alone (Human Rights Watch, World Report 2026).
The root of the scar discussed in the book is not merely literary; it is a reality that permeates Montepuez. That is why this Book Club, in partnership with the and , is empowering young people to break the cycles of violence.
