MATH SOLVED | At just 13, Soini Shoonga, a learner at Makalani Primary School in the Otjozondjupa Region, has developed an Electrical Maths Quiz to make learning mathematics more interactive and help address challenges faced by learners in the subject.

Inspired by an educational Biology quiz he discovered on YouTube, Shoonga developed the project and went on to win third place at the Grootfontein Circuit Science Fair. He later won N$20,000 at the National Science Fair to further develop his innovation.

The quiz box features a spin selector for mathematics notations.

Determined to go beyond the physical quiz, Shoonga is now developing Quiz Tutor, an educational app covering Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Natural Science, and Religious and Moral Education. The has an AI-powered assistant designed to explain homework activities in detail, with a focus on supporting Namibian learners and languages. It currently targets Grades 5 to 7.

Shoonga is one of the participants presenting their projects at the 2026 National ICT in Education Convention and Exhibition in Otjiwarongo.

YOUNG INNOVATOR | Lucas Nghuuhange, a young innovator from Mwadikange Kaulinge Secondary School in the Ohangwena Region, has developed an excavator that can be operated from a safer distance.

Nguuhange is one of the innovators presenting their projects at the National ICT in Education Convention and Exhibition taking place in Otjiwarongo.

The solar-powered machine uses a DEC system and control gloves, with one glove fitted with motion sensors and the other providing control functions. The innovation aims to improve safety when operating heavy machinery in dangerous environments where falling rocks or other hazards could put operators’ lives at risk.

Nghuuhange was among the learners who participated in the 2026 National Science Fair, where he won a N$40,000 prize to further develop and upgrade his project.
