WINDHOEK – Manufacturing, Leather Tanning and Processing company, Nakara, has donated leather valued at N$100,000 to the Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) to support offender rehabilitation and skills training programmes.

The donated leather will be utilised in industrial workshops at correctional facilities, where inmates receive practical training in upholstery, leatherwork, arts and crafts, and the production of various leather goods. The initiative is expected to enhance skill development opportunities and provide offenders with marketable skills to support their reintegration into society.

Speaking during the handover, Managing Director Max Schaefes underscored the importance of equipping offenders with skills that remain relevant in an evolving labour market.

He noted that there is a growing need for skills transfer in trades that are less susceptible to technological disruption, adding that practical craftsmanship and leatherwork continue to offer viable opportunities for self-employment and entrepreneurship.

Schaefes further revealed that the company has worked with former inmates who are now operating successful leathercraft businesses, describing their achievements as evidence of the positive impact of skills training provided within correctional facilities.

Upon receiving the donation, Deputy Commissioner-General for Correctional Operations, Sam Shaalulange, expressed appreciation to Nakara for its generous contribution and continued support for offender rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives.
