Six researchers from Namibian institutions named in the 2026 World’s Top 2% Scientists database
The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) congratulates six researchers affiliated with Namibian institutions. They appear in the 2026 update of the Stanford University and Elsevier database of standardised citation indicators, widely known as the World’s Top 2% Scientists list. Professor John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University oversees the list, compiling the database from Scopus data; Elsevier published the 2026 update on 7 October 2026. The single-year list recognises citation impact during 2025 and ranks each of the six in the top 2% of their scientific subfield worldwide.
Each rank below is the researcher’s worldwide rank in the database, excluding self-citations, followed by their position within their subfield.
Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST)
- Prof. Michael Sony, Business and Management, world rank 7,458, top 0.343% of subfield (now at Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand)
- Prof. Uchendu Eugene Chigbu, Urban and Regional Planning, world rank 33,861, top 0.691% of subfield
- Prof. Heike Winschiers-Theophilus, Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing, world rank 229,475, top 1.977% of subfield
University of Namibia (UNAM)
- Prof. Kassian T.T. Amesho, Environmental Sciences, world rank 103,201, top 1.687% of subfield
- Prof. Kazhila C. Chinsembu, Medicinal and Biomolecular Chemistry, world rank 111,476, top 0.371% of subfield (now Director-General of the Higher Education Authority of Zambia)
- Prof. Ndakalimwe Naftal Gabriel, Fisheries, world rank 239,532, top 1.296% of subfield
These achievements speak directly to the mandate of NCRST under the Research, Science and Technology Act, 2004 (Act No. 23 of 2004). Among the objects of the Act, in section 2(1)(b), is “to promote and develop research, science and technology in Namibia”. Section 5(1)(f) further tasks the NCRST “to promote awareness and national appreciation of the value of research, science and technology to social, cultural and economic development”.
At the same time, citation indicators capture one dimension of research and NCRST values equally the teaching, mentorship and public service behind these careers. Even so, this kind of visibility matters for Namibia’s research system and for the young scientists who will follow. Congratulations to all six researchers and to NUST and UNAM, whose research environments made this work possible.
Fostering Excellence through Knowledge and Innovation.
