What is calibration and does your business need it?
Calibration is the process of comparing your measuring instrument against a known reference standard to verify its accuracy.
Sound technical? Here’s the plain-language version:
- You have a scale at your shop or factory
- Over time, scales drift and become inaccurate
- Calibration tells you HOW inaccurate — and corrects it
- NSI issues a calibration certificate which indicates the status of your instrument’s accuracy.
Under the Metrology Act, working standards must be calibrated annually. NSI provides accredited calibration services for mass, volume, temperature, and Dimension.

Today, the Namibian Standards Institution (NSI) hosted the Metrology Technician Stakeholder Workshop on Metrology Compliance Requirements for all measuring instruments at the Windhoek Country Club.
The workshop, officially opened through remarks from NSI CEO Dr. Eino Mvula and delivered by Head of Metrology, Mr. Simasiku Matali, brought together industry representatives, registered metrology technicians, and key stakeholders to strengthen understanding of the Metrology Act, 2022 and its regulatory requirements.
The engagement focused not only to strengthen understanding of the legal and regulatory requirements governing the repair and maintenance of measuring instruments and the registration of metrology technicians, but also to facilitate meaningful engagement on the practical realities of implementation. We recognize that an effective regulatory framework must be supported by continuous dialogue with those responsible for its application and compliance.
The workshop further thought to enhance compliance, measurement integrity, and fostering collaboration between regulators and industry players to ensure accurate, reliable, and trusted measurements that support consumer protection, fair trade, public confidence, and Namibia’s economic growth.
NSI remains committed to building a transparent, effective, and collaborative metrology system that upholds quality standards across all sectors in Namibia.

Namibia’s national measurement standards what are they and why do they matter?
Did you know Namibia has its own set of national measurement standards, physical reference objects and instruments from which all other measurements in the country are derived?
The NSI Scientific and Industrial Metrology Division is responsible for:
- Maintaining Namibia’s National Measurement Standards
- Comparing our standards with international references to ensure accuracy
- Disseminating measurement traceability to industries, health institutions, and regulatory bodies
- Publishing Namibia’s Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs)
This is the invisible backbone of every accurate measurement made in Namibia.

Why accreditation makes Namibia’s measurements internationally trusted
Happy World Accreditation Day!
You might wonder: who checks the NSI? The answer is accreditation.
NSI’s metrology and calibration services are accredited, which means independent Regional bodies have assessed our laboratories and confirmed that our measurements meet global benchmarks.
This accreditation connects Namibia’s measurement system to the global measurement infrastructure through AFRIMETS and SADCMEL, ensuring that a measurement made in Windhoek is trusted in Johannesburg, Frankfurt, or Beijing.
In trade, health, and safety, internationally recognised measurements open doors.

Here’s a question: how do you KNOW your morning coffee mug holds exactly 250ml?
Or that the 1kg of mince at your butcher really weighs 1kg?
The answer is METROLOGY, the science of measurement and at NSI, it’s one of our most critical services.
The NSI Metrology Department is Namibia’s official metrology agency, mandated under the Metrology Act to ensure every measurement in Namibia is accurate, fair, and traceable to international standards.
