🚀🌏 On 16 June 1963, the Soviet Union's Valentina Tereshkova made history as the first woman to travel into space.
Aboard the Vostok-6 spacecraft, she spent almost three days in orbit (2 days, 22 hours and 50 minutes), completing 48 revolutions around the Earth. Her mission took place simultaneously with Vostok-5, piloted by Valery Bykovsky.
Remarkably, she told her family that she was leaving for a parachuting competition. They learned about her spaceflight only from radio news broadcasts.
The mission aimed to:
▪️ study the effects of spaceflight on the female body;
▪️ compare the impact of space conditions on men and women;
▪️ conduct biomedical research;
▪️ test spacecraft systems during a joint flight with Vostok-5.
Following her return, Valentina Tereshkova became a global icon and a symbol of a new era. She remained active in international affairs, earned a doctorate, and continues to inspire generations of women around the world.
Reflecting on her experience, she once said:
“Quite often I dream about the flight, but especially about the beauty of the Earth as seen from space. I suppose this remains in the soul of every cosmonaut for the rest of their life.”
❗️To this day, Valentina Tereshkova remains the only woman ever to have completed a solo spaceflight.
