House Committee on Navy Moves to Carry Over Unapproved 2025 Budget Into 2026
From Marcus Nkire
Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Navy, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi (representing Pankshin/Kanam/Kanke Federal Constituency, Plateau State), on Wednesday led a brief but strategic meeting aimed at charting a clearer course for the Nigerian Navy’s financial direction in the year ahead.
The session, though concise, dug into the nitty-gritty of budgetary expectations for 2026. Members reviewed the status of the 2025 budget and, after deliberations, agreed that the unapproved allocation from last year would be formally carried over into the 2026 cycle. According to the committee, this approach ensures continuity and prevents critical naval programmes from stalling.
Also present were Hon. Alex Ikwechegh (Aba North/South Federal Constituency, Abia State) and Hon. Nwachukwu Canice Moore (Ehimembano/Ihitte-Uboma/Obowo Federal Constituency, Imo State), Hon Garba Rabi'u Kamba( Deputy Chairman) all who contributed to the discussions, emphasizing the need for stable funding to strengthen maritime security and operational readiness.
The committee is expected to reconvene in the coming days as it fine-tunes recommendations ahead of wider legislative scrutiny, signalling what may be a busier budget season for the Navy compared to previous years.

Tension Erupts in the House of Representatives Over Electoral Act Deliberations
From Marcus Nkire
A tense scene unfolded during yesterday’s plenary in the House of Representatives as lawmakers clashed over proposed adjustments to the Electoral Act.
The disagreement centered on whether the country should maintain manual election procedures or proceed with the electronic transmission system, which has been approved for more than two years. Minority members pressed for full digital adoption, while several majority lawmakers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) argued to retain manual methods.
Tensions escalated when the Deputy Speaker moved rapidly through the order of business, drawing accusations of “steamrolling” motions without proper debate. Several lawmakers raised procedural concerns, including the absence of order papers, the documents that outline the day’s agenda and guide deliberations. This lack of access fueled complaints that members were being denied the transparency needed to engage meaningfully with the legislative process.
Outside the chambers, opposition lawmakers admonished citizens to remain attentive and vocal, stressing that democratic safeguards rely heavily on public pressure. One of the lawmakers, Hon, Alex Ikwechegh urged citizens to take initiative, stating that “Power is not given; it is taken,” framing the moment as part of a broader effort to resist any backslide in electoral reforms.
Analysts say the walkout that followed; triggered by escalating shouting, procedural disputes, and a breakdown in order, signals deeper tensions within the legislature. The incident highlights growing mistrust over electoral procedures, raising questions about whether the political class can reach consensus before the next election cycle.
I am deeply honored to join countless admirers across our state and nation in celebrating General Azubuike Ihejirika on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
Your distinguished service to Nigeria, most notably your steadfast and courageous leadership as former Chief of Army Staff, remains a source of immense pride and enduring inspiration. At a defining period in our national security history, your discipline, strategic foresight, and unwavering commitment to duty strengthened our armed forces and reinforced the resolve of our nation against insurgency.
You have exemplified the finest virtues of service: courage under pressure, integrity in leadership, and devotion to country above self. In every assignment entrusted to you, you carried the resilient and industrious spirit of Abia with dignity and distinction.
As you mark this remarkable milestone, I extend my deepest respect and warmest wishes. May this new chapter be graced with robust health, continued fulfillment, and the abiding gratitude of a nation you served with honor and sacrifice.
Congratulations on this platinum jubilee of 70 years. May the years ahead bring renewed strength and continued impact.
Happy Birthday to a truly gallant General.

Today, my heart is full, yet gently burdened with memory, gratitude, and reflection.
At the Imo State 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee held last week, the Government of Imo State bestowed a profound honour on my family. My late uncle, Commodore Amadi Guy Ikwechegh, former Military Governor of Imo State, was posthumously awarded the Grand Service Star of Imo State (GSSI), and our family was granted Honorary State Citizenship.
Receiving this award on his behalf was a moment I will never forget. It was far more than a ceremony; it was a powerful affirmation of a life dedicated to service, and for me, it was deeply personal.
To the public, Commodore Ikwechegh was a pioneering leader, a distinguished naval officer, and an erudite administrator who helped lay critical foundations for Imo State during his tenure from 1986 to 1989. His record speaks eloquently for itself; from the Nigerian Defence Academy to Dartmouth College, from strategic naval commands to the Governor’s Office.
But to me,he was simply Uncle Amadi
This honour is a resounding echo of his life’s work. I extend my profound and heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, for this thoughtful act of recognition and remembrance. By instituting the Imo State @ 50 Star Honours, Your Excellency has demonstrated a deep commitment to preserving our history and celebrating the giants upon whose shoulders our state stands. Thank you for ensuring that the labours of our heroes past are not forgotten, but instead woven deliberately into the fabric of Imo State’s legacy and future aspirations.
As I stood there while the award was presented, I felt the beautiful and solemn weight of legacy. As the only member of our family currently serving in government.
I remain deeply grateful to the Government and people of Imo State for this act of remembrance. You have honoured not only a former Governor, but a great man, one who gave selflessly to his family, his state, and his country.
Thank you, Imo State.
Thank you Comodore Amadi ikwechegh
Your labour was not in vain.
We remember.
We honour.
We continue.

AN OPEN LETTER TO MR PRESIDENT
Dear Mr President
This is a time to unite our country; this is a time to heal our nation. Everything seems to be in disarray.
We are witnessing the needless killings of both Muslims and Christians across the country.
We are seeing growing disregard for Nigeria by global leaders, with unsettling conversations about the possibility of external invasion.
We continue to endure persistent hardship that weighs heavily on our citizens.
And the political tension consuming major opposition parties—PDP, Labour, and others—has only deepened the national unease.
It is perceptible even to the blind that there is tension in the land. Yet, in moments like this, leadership becomes the anchor of hope. The only person capable of reuniting this nation and placing her once again on a progressive path is the President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Let us remember the labour of our heroes past. Let us keep this country united and commit ourselves to healing our land.
My humble and sincere appeal to Mr President is to grant pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Clemency at this moment will not only quell the security tension in the country, particularly in the South-East, but will also draw his supporters closer to the leadership of Mr President—the father of this great nation.
Let us preserve our unity so that Nigeria remains strong enough to confront anyone who intends to undermine our sovereignty.
Signed
Hon Alex Mascot Ikwechegh
Member Representing AbaNorth-AbaSouth Federal Constituency

I had the privilege of representing the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, at the commissioning of the Portland–NASENI Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Plant and Training Centre.
This landmark project—born from the collaboration between NASENI and Portland Gas—comes at a critical time for our nation. It provides Nigerians with affordable, eco-friendly alternatives to conventional fuels, while also creating a training hub to equip our people with the skills to drive the gas revolution forward.
This is more than just an energy project; it’s a transformative stride toward a greener, more resilient economy—aligning with our national goals for energy security, economic relief, and environmental sustainability.
The 10th Assembly of the House of Representatives stands ready to keep partnering with innovation-driven institutions and the private sector to make Nigeria’s energy transition a success.
