Episode 5 – Atiku Abubakar: Champion of Education and Human Capital.

… An insight into Atiku Abubakar Foundation’s scholarship award to Mary Victor Zira.

Nigeria’s future depends not on oil or natural resources, but on the strength of her human capital. Yet today, our education system struggles with underfunding, dilapidated infrastructure, unmotivated teachers, and millions of out-of-school children.

In this Episode 5 of The Atiku Mid-Week Political Band Series, we spotlight Atiku Abubakar’s enduring vision for education, a vision anchored on the belief that no nation can rise above the quality of its education system.

Atiku has always affirmed: “Education is the passport to the future, and every Nigerian child deserves access to it.” For him, education is not a privilege for the few but a right for all. He sees it as the bedrock of national renewal, the bridge between poverty and prosperity, and the engine that drives innovation, productivity, and progress.

Beyond politics, Atiku has lived this vision. He invested personally in establishing schools, dishing out scholarships and founded the American University of Nigeria (AUN), one of the leading private universities in Africa. This bold step is more than philanthropy; it is a demonstration of his belief in raising leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs who can compete globally and transform Nigeria locally.

Critics often dismiss political promises on education as empty talk, but Atiku’s record proves otherwise. As Vice President, he pushed policies that improved access to schooling and strengthened federal capacity to support states in expanding learning opportunities. He has also been consistent in proposing reforms to align education with the demands of the modern economy, particularly in science, technology, and vocational training.

The human face of this vision is clear: millions of young Nigerians today graduate without employable skills, while others never even make it to school. Atiku understands their pain because his own journey began from humble beginnings. He knows that education transforms lives, it transformed his, and he is determined to ensure that every Nigerian child is given the same chance to succeed.

For Atiku, the urgency is not just about building classrooms, but about building futures. His blueprint includes tackling the out-of-school children crisis, upgrading technical and vocational education, reforming tertiary institutions, investing in teacher training, and integrating digital learning. This is leadership that recognizes that in the 21st century, nations thrive not by their resources but by their knowledge base.

The truth is clear: no country has ever achieved greatness without prioritizing education. Disunity, insecurity, and economic stagnation all find root in ignorance and lack of opportunity.Atiku Abubakar offers a tested and credible path, one that restores education as the foundation for Nigeria’s unity, growth, and global competitiveness.

The call to action is urgent: Nigerians must support leaders who see education not as a campaign slogan but as a national mission. Atiku Abubakar stands as that leader, tested, trusted, and prepared to build the human capital that will secure Nigeria’s future. Let us share his vision, embrace his plan, and work together for a nation where every child can learn, grow, and thrive.

ALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR (GCON): THE CONSUMMATE DEMOCRAT...

Atiku Abubakar

"Atiku Abubakar, who served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, was involved in several legal and political controversies during and after his time in office. Below are key instances of court cases or legal disputes linked to his role or actions during the administration:

1. 2006 Impeachment Attempt and Legal Battle with Obasanjo

Background: A major rift occurred between Atiku and President Obasanjo towards the end of their second term. Atiku opposed Obasanjo’s alleged third term agenda.

Court Case: Obasanjo declared Atiku's office vacant, accusing him of disloyalty and corruption related to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF).

Outcome:

Atiku challenged this in court.

In 2007, the Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled in his favor, affirming that the President cannot remove the Vice President without proper constitutional process (i.e., impeachment by the National Assembly).

It was a landmark judgment reinforcing the doctrine of separation of powers and constitutional democracy.

2. Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scandal

Allegation: Atiku was accused of mismanaging funds from the PTDF while serving as Vice President.

Investigations:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) under Nuhu Ribadu investigated the matter.

The Senate also conducted its own investigation.

Legal Status: No formal conviction; Atiku maintained that the allegations were politically motivated.

---

3. 2007 Election Disqualification Case

Context: Ahead of the 2007 presidential elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) attempted to disqualify Atiku from contesting, citing corruption allegations.

Court Case: Atiku challenged the disqualification.

Outcome: The Supreme Court ruled in Atiku’s favor, stating that INEC had no constitutional power to disqualify any candidate — only a court of law could..." continues in comments

ATIKU WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE 2023

Being text of a press conference by His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), Waziri Adamawa, Vice President of Nigeria (1999-2007) and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (2023), at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre on the 5th of October 2023.

Protocol

Gentlemen of the Press, Fellow Citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I consider it important to address and report to you today on issues that define the future of elective government and legitimate leadership in our country.

Political leadership and active citizenship matter because they are ways through which we all work together to build a country that works for all who live in it. Our country is bigger than any of us, and its standing in the world affects the fate of all who come from or live in it. As leaders, it is our duty to advance the well-being of all our people and of the country.

For this purpose, my generation worked hard to return the soldiers to the barracks and to defend the right of the people to elect and establish for ourselves a legitimate government. Our elections are established and governed by law and founded on the constitution from which leadership and government in Nigeria alone derive their legitimacy.

The people look up to us as leaders to respect these rules and, where necessary, to defend them. This is what brings us here.

Today, we are called upon again as a people to uphold and defend the ground rules of elective government in our country. The constitution prescribes the requirements for those who seek the highest elective office in the land.

It should not take months or, indeed, decades, for the institutions concerned to be able to do their work in establishing the credibility of any certificates presented by candidates for public office.

We undertook this journey at great cost and for important reasons. The ground rules for legitimate governance in our country need to be upheld, and the reputation of our country is at stake. That affects everyone, Nigerians everywhere.

I am a democrat by conviction and a citizen of a country that I love. The issues at stake in this case require us once more to re-dedicate ourselves to both the country and our constitution.

Now, we entrust these facts to us all as citizens and as leaders of the institutions charged with interpreting our constitution. I should thank the lawyers both in Nigeria and in the United States, who have assisted us in bringing clarity and definitive answers to these issues that appear to have defied our institutions for nearly a quarter of a century. I also want to extend my gratitude to Nigerian citizens and friends of Nigeria both within and beyond the shores of our country for their patience as we have sought to find the facts and establish the truth.

I wish to pay tribute to the late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who inspired us on this path of discovery. Now, he can truly rest in peace in the assurance that what he started about 23 years ago has come to fruition. Gani’s vindication today gives credence to the saying that no matter how fast a lie runs, the truth will someday overtake it.

Former American President Thomas Jefferson once said, “If I had to choose between government without newspapers, and newspapers without government, I wouldn’t hesitate to choose the latter”. From exposing the Watergate scandal and unravelling the dubious certificates of politicians, journalists have maintained eternal vigilance by bridging the gap and stepping in when other arms of government failed.

RE: ATIKU VS CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY/TINUBU.

Except From Judge Gilbert Judgement…

- With respect to the privacy objections the court held that the FERPA statute does not create an independent privilege for educational records, but instead makes educational records confidential. Disclosure of educational records is permitted under FERPA if it is necessary to comply with a lawfully issued subpoena or judicial order and the burden is on the party requesting educational records to show that their interest in obtaining the records outweighs the privacy interest of the student.

*- The court held that Atiku’s interest in obtaining BAT’s records from CSU OUTWEIGHS BAT’s privacy rights because BAT put his diploma at issue by submitting it to INEC. BAT also submitted other educational documents in a related proceeding in Nigeria, some of which were certified by a CSU official, as discussed above. Atiku therefore SATISFIED that requirement* !

- BAT’s lawyers also objected to the discovery on the basis that it would place too much burden on CSU but the court shut them up stating that they *had no standing (Locus) to do that. CSU is the proper party to do that. (I LIKE THIS COURT O!)

*- The court also overruled CSU’s objection stating* *they had devoted significant time and resources to the case as being insufficient. CSU’s* *preference on written instead of oral deposition was also overruled and the court highlighted CSU’s did not justify the need for the court to protect it with that method and that an oral deposition is the most effective method to obtain information from a deponent under the circumstances of the case.*

*- The court concluded by ordering CSU* *to* *RELEASE ALL the relevant documents in 48 hours and deposition should take place immediately after release of the documents. The court also ordered them to work on weekends if necessary.*
_THIS IS THAT END OF THE DISCUSSION, END_ _OF THE ROAD AND THE BEGINNING OF THE THE NEW NIGERIA OF ALL OF OUR DREAMS._

*MY SUBMISSION* :

1. Judge Gilbert ruled using Solomonic wisdom.

2. _The Oluwole tactics and Agbero Technicalities modus operandi of BAT and the_ _Injustice league spectacularly failed in a court dedicated to doing substantive Justice_ .

3. Justice was done as predicted and truly and indeed the US Judiciary is a leveler that deserves its flowers.

4. *Atiku also deserves his flowers for being a dogged* *fighter. Assuming Nigeria was a working country, this case should* *have been instituted by INEC or PEPT but you sef know say Injustice league cannot thrive in* a *disinfected environment, Avengers full ground. Perhaps we should canvass that* *American Judges should supervise our election tribunals (Just kidding).*

5. On a serious note, our Judiciary needs serious help, reforms and light. We just witnessed firsthand how a sane Judiciary operates and could reasonably predict the outcome of a case in Line with Justice and Justice was truly and indeed served.

6. _We Pin and await the surprises from the documents that’ll be released from CSU_

God Bless the American

His Excellency Atiku Abubakar’s Press Conference Following The Outcome Of The

PROTOCOL

Good afternoon, Gentlemen of the Press.

I am here today to give my official reaction to the judgment delivered yesterday by the Presidential Election Petition Court on the 2023 presidential election.

As you already know, I approached the court following the declaration by INEC that the APC and its candidate are the winners of the February 25, Presidential Election.

My decision to go to court is anchored in my belief that the court is the sanctuary of justice. The journey of my political career, as you know, holds so much to the courage and fearless decisions of our judiciary.

Indeed, I am no stranger to legal battles, and I can say that I have a fair idea of how the court system works. All through my career as a politician, I have been a fighter, and I must say that I have found the judiciary as a worthy pillar to rest on in the pursuit of justice.

The last presidential election in our country and the way it was managed by the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission, leaves behind unenviable precedents, which I believe the courts have a duty to redress. Our gains in ensuring transparent elections through the deployment of technology was heavily compromised by INEC in the way it managed the last presidential election, and I am afraid that the judgement of the court as rendered by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal yesterday, failed to restore confidence in our dreams of free and fair elections devoid of human manipulations.

Like I did say at the beginning of this legal battle when I instructed my lawyers to file my petition challenging the outcome of the presidential election, my ultimate goal in this pursuit is to ensure that democracy is further strengthened through the principles and processes of fair hearing.

Gentlemen of the press, I take great pains to tell you that the decision of the court of first instance on this matter utterly falls far short of that expectation. I am therefore here to tell you that, though the judgment of the court yesterday is respected, it is a judgment that I refuse to accept. I refuse to accept the judgment because I believe that it is bereft of substantial justice. However, the disappointment in the verdict of the court can never destroy my confidence in the judiciary.

Consequently, I have asked my lawyers to activate my constitutionally guaranteed rights of appeal to the higher court, which, in the instance, is the Supreme Court. It is my conviction that the electoral process in Nigeria should be devoid of untidy manipulations and that the outcome of every election should be a perfect reflection of the wishes of the electorate. I believe that such is the only way through which our democracy can have a manifest expression of its true meaning. Whether I prevail in this quest or not, the record of my effort in ensuring an order of credible elections in Nigeria shall remain for the future generations to evaluate.

On this note, I urge all my supporters to remain steadfast. I urge them to take solace in an immortal lesson I learned from my leader and mentor, the late Shehu Yar’Adua, that losing a battle is less important than losing the war. We might have lost a battle yesterday, but the war is well ahead of us. And I believe that with our hopes in God, we shall win the war of restoring confidence in our electoral system.

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the Press, I thank you for your attention.

Atiku Abubakar, GCON
