Across many communities in West Africa, children go to school without regular meals. This affects their ability to learn and stay engaged in class. At the same time, local farmers often lack stable markets for their produce.

Through the Project for the Promotion of Integrated School Feeding Models in West Africa (PMAI-AO), school feeding is becoming more than a social intervention, it is connecting schools, farmers, and communities in a way that supports both learning and livelihoods.

In 12 ECOWAS Member States, more than 36,000 children have received over 3 million school meals, helping them attend school regularly, stay focused in class, and improve their learning experience. This model is also creating reliable markets for local farmers and generating 2,879 jobs, with 70% held by women, strengthening incomes and supporting families.

Co-financed by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the ECOWAS Commission, and implemented by the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (RAAF/ARAA), this initiative reflects a regional effort to promote integrated school feeding models that contribute to human capital development, food security, and community resilience.

This is how school feeding can go beyond the classroom — building stronger, more connected communities across the ECOWAS region.
