Outcry in Nasarawa Eggon Over Failed AGILE Borehole Projects
Residents of Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area in Nasarawa State have raised alarm over the poor state of solar powered boreholes installed under the AGILE project.
The concerns came to light during a visit by Radio Nigeria to several sites in Nasarawa Eggon town to assess the functionality of the facilities.
The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), a World Bank-supported programme implemented by the Federal Ministry of Education, is designed to improve access to secondary education for girls aged 10 to 20 across 18 states, including Nasarawa.
However, despite the significant investment in these boreholes, many residents say access to clean and potable water remains a major challenge.
A resident, Ibrahim Andafu, described the initiative as commendable but lamented the ongoing water scarcity in the community.
Other residents, including Yohanna Umbugadu and Asheezi Bulus, noted that several of the boreholes have not been functional since installation. They called for stricter monitoring of projects and accountability from contractors.
Community members also emphasized the need for residents to take ownership of public infrastructure by ensuring proper maintenance and protection of such facilities.
Responding to the concerns, AGILE Component Lead, Francis Angbalaga, assured that efforts are ongoing to repair the faulty boreholes, with completion expected within six weeks.
