Motherhood should be a journey of celebration, not a lifetime of silent suffering. Yet, obstetric fistula continues to affect thousands of women in Nigeria, often resulting from prolonged and obstructed labour during childbirth.
This devastating condition can lead to constant leakage, stigma, and social isolation. But healing is possible.
On this International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, the Nigerian Government, through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), is helping restore hope and dignity by providing FREE fistula repair surgeries for vulnerable women and supporting health insurance enrolment through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF).
If you are affected, or know a woman who is, please do not suffer in silence. Help is available, treatment is free, and support may be closer than you think.

Access to emergency healthcare can mean the difference between life and death for mothers and newborns. In Umuchigbo, Enugu State, the NHIA Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) initiative is changing lives through the dedicated services of Goodwill Medical Centre.
Within just six months, the facility has supported 118 women and financed over 90 caesarean sections, emergency obstetric care, essential medicines, and newborn support — ensuring vulnerable women receive life-saving treatment without out-of-pocket payment at the point of care.
Speaking during a facility visit, Professor Uche Amazigo highlighted the importance of the programme in reducing maternal mortality and strengthening access to quality healthcare in underserved communities.
The hospital has also trained 31 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) to improve referrals and ensure pregnant women receive skilled medical care on time.
According to Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, the CEmONC initiative demonstrates how strategic healthcare financing and social protection can improve survival outcomes for mothers and babies while advancing universal health coverage in Nigeria.
Together, we are ensuring that no mother is left behind.
