Federal Fire Service Seeks Collaboration with NAEC
The Acting Chairman/CEO of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, today, 18th March 2026, received the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Samuel Adeyemi Olumode, alongside his Deputy Controller-Generals, on a courtesy visit to the Commission.
The visit aimed to explore potential areas of collaboration, particularly in capacity building and the provision of fire cover services for NAEC and its centres.
In his remarks, the Acting Chairman welcomed the Controller-General and his delegation, expressing the Commission’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with the Service. He highlighted NAEC’s commitment to supporting capacity development initiatives, especially in emergency preparedness and response training facilitated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as other specialized training programmes aligned with the mandate of the Federal Fire Service some of which their personnel have previously benefited from.
Dr. Ekedegwa further noted that the Commission has consistently engaged the services of the Federal Fire Service and will continue to do so, particularly in the provision of firefighting equipment and the training of staff across its centres

Strengthening collaboration for Nigeria’s nuclear energy development and international engagement.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), Dr. Engr. Anthony Ekedegwa, and his management team in his office in Abuja on Thursday, 5th February 2026, to discuss areas of further collaboration.
Top on the agenda was Nigeria’s assessed contribution to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the deployment of Nigeria’s nuclear energy programme in line with Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda for socio-economic development.
During the meeting, the Honourable Minister encouraged the NAEC team to make such interactions more frequent so that the Ministry can remain well informed about the Commission’s activities and ongoing initiatives.

NAEC, IAEA Begin Phase-II Review for Nigeria’s Second Research Reactor
NAEC and IAEA have commenced the Phase II of an Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Mission for Nigeria’s proposed Multi-purpose Research Reactor.
Dubbed Research Reactor-2 (RR2), the facility is expected to serve as a cornerstone for national development. Key objectives for the project include supporting advanced scientific research, enhancing the education and training of nuclear professionals, enabling materials testing, and facilitating neutron activation analysis. Additionally, the reactor holds potential for the production of radioisotopes for medical and industrial applications.
This was disclosed by the Acting Chairman/CEO of NAEC, Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, in his opening address at the launch of the INIR Phase-II mission in Abuja, Nigeria.
Leading the three-man IAEA expert team, Andrey Sitnikov assured NAEC and the Nigerian government of the Agency’s full cooperation to ensure the success of the review.
It would be recalled that the Phase-I INIR mission was successfully conducted in 2015.

DSS Delegation Visits NAEC Center.
A delegation from the Department of State Services (DSS) recently visited the Nuclear Technology Center (NTC) in Sheda, Nigeria. Led by Mrs. Nadia Mohammed Soso, Director, Simulation and Crises Management, the team was briefed on the diverse applications of the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) and its potential to enhance national food security. The delegation, which included top management staff from NTC and the Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC), received a guided tour of the GIF and the Multipurpose Laboratory, also known as the Glass House ¹.
The visit aimed to assess the peaceful application of nuclear research and development in advancing Nigeria's agricultural and food security objectives, contributing to socio-economic development.

Nigeria Requests Phase 2 INIR Mission from the IAEA
Earlier this week, during the Annual Integrated Work Plan (IWP) meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, Nigeria formally requested a Phase 2 Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) Mission in support of the country’s ongoing Nuclear Power Programme.
The Nigerian delegation to the meeting was led by Engr. Dr. Anthony Ekedegwa, Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC).
This request marks another significant step in strengthening Nigeria’s commitment to developing a safe, secure, and sustainable nuclear power infrastructure in line with international best practices.
